Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsys

Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys (1970) Capitol Records/STAO-472 - US Pressing - LP In 24bit/96kHz - ONLY RE-POST

Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys
Label: Capitol Records/STAO-472 | Released: 1970 | This Issue: 1977 | Genre: Classic Rock
Mastered By Capitol
Vinyl | LP Cover (1:1) | FLAC | 24bit/96kHz & 16bit/44kHz

This is the album that Hendrix "owed" Capitol for releasing him over to Reprise Records and significantly, it isn't a studio effort, as his Reprise albums have been. Which is not to imply that it is any better than those Experience albums. The context of the album is vital — Band of Gypsys was one of Hendrix' 1969 amalgamations consisting of Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass, among others. They hadn't been together very long when this session was recorded live at the Fillmore East, New Year's Eve 1969/70, and the music shows it.

On New Year's Eve, Hendrix, his old Army buddy bassist Billy Cox, and ex-Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles performed a loose, jam-filled set at New York's Fillmore East. Released a few months after his New Year's Eve 1970 concert, Band of Gypsys underscored Hendrix's desired return to basics. His basic was at a level most guitarists could never attain in a lifetime of playing.

History

After Hendrix disbanded the Jimi Hendrix Experience in mid-1969, he formed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows to fulfill the contract for the Experience to play Woodstock. Bassist Billy Cox (who had played with Hendrix while they were in the army) had been rehearsing and playing with Hendrix since April, but the band was short-lived. With Cox and his drummer friend Buddy Miles, Hendrix next formed the Band of Gypsys, this time to fulfill his obligation to produce an LP of new material for Ed Chalpin, to be released on the Capitol label. Hendrix, in interviews as early as March 1969, had already mentioned a "jam" album to be titled Band of Gypsys. Hendrix also mentioned in his introduction at Woodstock that "Band of Gypsys" was an alternative name for the group performing there.
