Joy Division - Still, 1981 (Factory Records, Cd 1990)

Ian Curtis' death prompted a flood of bootlegs and similar "tributes," likely motivated more by profit than anything else. Seeking to trump this problem – though arguably coming from much the same standpoint – Factory issued Still in 1981, a haphazard if still useful collection of odds, ends, and more. Considering that the band's many singles weren't properly compiled until much later on Substance, Still makes only partial sense – the studio cuts were mostly outtakes, while the live songs had their own problems. Of the studio takes, only two tracks had seen formal release beforehand – the mesmerizing post-punk meets R&B groove of "Glass" and the searing "Dead Souls," certainly both worthy of even more listens. Beyond that, things were more hit and miss, with strong instrumental performances given to slightly indifferent songs and vice versa.

Joy Division is one of the definitive bands from the rock culture. With their dark poetic inception and a sound marked by a new way of thinking about how music should be created, the Manchester band served as a model for countless artists. Today, just as it marks 35 years of the death of Ian Curtis (the legendary singer and lyricist of the group) The Many Faces Of Joy Division shows the hidden world behind the group, their rare recordings, side projects, their influences and the Manchester scene where the band bloomed. With a wonderful cover art, remastered sound and extensive liner notes, The Many Faces of Joy Division is an album not only for fans but for anyone who wants to understand the influence (and enjoy the music) of a truly transcendent bad, which made beauty out of sadness.

Substance is a compilation album featuring singles by the 1970's English rock band Joy Division. The compilation was originally released in 1988, it peaked at number 7 on the UK charts and made it to the Billboard 200 chart at number 146. The singles are taken from four EPs: An Ideal for Living, A Factory Sample, Earcom 2: Contradiction and Licht und Blindheit. The record also includes a few singles that were previously unreleased on albums by the group.

The Heart and Soul set rectified the errors of Still by including some far better live performances on its fourth and final disc, but Joy Division aficionados spoke of even better recordings still never formally released. This complaint was settled with Preston, the first of two archival concert recordings, both of which finally do justice to the band's stage work. It's an important point, since Joy Division were a band able to work on three different levels with equal brilliance – on singles, album, and in concert – and Preston is the first real document able to demonstrate the latter point beyond question.

If Unknown Pleasures was Joy Division at their most obsessively, carefully focused, ten songs yet of a piece, Closer was the sprawl, the chaotic explosion that went every direction at once. Who knows what the next path would have been had Ian Curtis not chosen his end? But steer away from the rereading of his every lyric after that date; treat Closer as what everyone else thought it was at first – simply the next album – and Joy Division's power just seems to have grown.

U.K. post-punk icons, Joy Division, had an immense and profound impact on contemporary music. Closer is their acclaimed gothic-rock masterpiece. Released in 1980, the album was NME’s “Album of the Year.” Produced by Martin Hannett, the recording continues where the first album left off with standouts including “Heart And Soul,” “Isolation” and “Twenty Four Hours”.

1997 release, a four disc set on London packaged in a 6 x 10" gatefold digibook with an 80 page illustrated book. 81 tracks total, including all cuts from the albums "Unknown Pleasures" (1979), "Closer" (1980) & "Substance" (1988), seven of the nine studiorecordings on "Still" (1981), plus Peel session versions of Love Will Tear Us Apart, Exercise One & Colony, the version of As You Said that appeared as the uncredited track on New Order's Video 586' 12" single and last -but certainly not least- 35 previously unreleased gems comprised of live & rare versions of their absolute finest. Utterly brilliant.
