For their 5th album, German trumpeter Julian and pianist Roman Wasserfuhr are in Brooklyn. If Brooklyn were not one of the five boroughs of New York City, its 2.6 million inhabitants would make it the 4th largest city in the United States. And the secret is out: Manhattan may have the establishment institutions like Lincoln Center or the Village Vanguard, but the real action is in Brooklyn, with an abundance of creativity being generated by musicians from the Wasserfuhr brothers’ generation, working in apartments, lofts, bars, clubs and studios.

German brothers Julian and Roman Wasserfuhr show the action-packed nature of Brooklyn through hard-hitting, horn-and-piano entanglements. Their new album, Landed in Brooklyn and features established musicians, like Grammy-winning Blackstar tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, who is all over this nine-track extravaganza, bassist Tim Lefebvre, and Kneebody drummer Nate Wood. Julian plays trumpet and flugelhorn, while Roman goes off on piano, marimba, and seaboard. The two received the break of a lifetime when Siegfried “Siggi” Loch, founder of the independent German jazz label ACT, gave the brothers their first shot at 17 and 20.

Trombonist Julian Priester, after playing with many different groups, including those of Sun Ra, Lionel Hampton, Dinah Washington, Max Roach, and Duke Ellington, was a member of the Herbie Hancock Sextet during 1970-1973. Hancock's intriguing ensemble went from funk to free blowing, and in its later period was experimenting with synthesizers. On Love, Love, Priester continues in that vein. The two lengthy improvisations are mostly on one-chord repetitive rhythmic vamps stated by the bass, featuring sound explorations and plenty of electronics. Only on the last half of the second medley does Priester himself emerge a bit from the electronic sounds. One is reminded of Bitches Brew, since that is an obvious influence, but also Hancock's group and Weather Report. The music develops slowly, but listeners with patience will enjoy the blending of the many different voices in this unusual musical stew.

Welcome to P51, Prog magazine's first cover CD for 2017. This first CD of the new year is certainly overflowing with promise. We feature former Limelight artist Baltic Fleet alongside Polymatters and Nerissa Schwarz, who seem to veer towards the synth side of prog. Then there are some real prog bangers in the shape of Kepler Ten, Kyros, The Fringe and Seas of Mirth, who can't fail to get the foot tapping and the head nodding. There's some stylish progressive rock from Glass Hammer and Aisles, and also from newbie Bugenhagen. Ten tracks of different styles, maybe, but all of the same level of quality.

Uzbek-born pianist Anna Malikova is best known for her interpretations of music by Chopin. She has performed and recorded both concertos, the complete etudes, preludes, and impromptus, and numerous individual solo works. But Malikova is hardly a specialist: she plays a wide range of compositions, taking in large segments of the outputs of J.S. Bach, Soler, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt, Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich. She has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America, and has performed with many of the world's leading ensembles, including the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and the major orchestras of Warsaw, Moscow, Sydney, Oslo, Tashkent, and others.

As the morning sun melts the snow on the high mountain peaks the clear fresh waters gather from the Mountain Stream. Its constant energy cascades and tumbles over rocks and crags forming pools and waterfalls that give new life to high soaring birds and other mountain animals. The power of the water builds to form its own path where it plunges into the Caverns Of Tranquillity. New sounds take to the air as if in nature's own cathedrals, the voices of nature are blended in song with the meandering waters. Bursting from the rock face in a sunlit waterfall the stream forms a rainbow in the sky and is reborn into the Peaceful Waters of a Happy Valley. The air is filled with the sound of birdsong, deer and other animals that come to drink from the Mountain Stream to find peace and tranquillity…
