Label: Kat Wright | Release Year: 2016

Considering that Kat Wright has been dominant on the Burlington music scene for half a decade, it’s surprising to realize that the new album she’s celebrating with a show Friday at Higher Ground is her first full-length release. Wright has been omnipresent locally in recent years, starting with late-night packed-room dance parties at Radio Bean, the Burlington coffeehouse/music venue founded by her husband of five years, Lee Anderson. From gigs at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival to Grace Potter’s Grand Point North festival and a sold-out April show in Higher Ground’s Ballroom, Wright and her band have spread their upbeat sound to increasingly sizable Vermont crowds.

Jazz Vocals | MP3 320 kbps | 47:31 | ~111 Mb
Label: NKR Records | Tracks: 11 | Rls.date: 2016

2016 release. Love and the Lack Thereof is a beautifully crafted and passionate example of some of the best vocal jazz available today. The album features Kat Gang's romantic, sly, and swinging take on lesser-known gems from the American Songbook, from the Lerner and Lane classic "My Shining Hour" to the bittersweet "Nobody's Heart (Belongs To Me)" by Rodgers and Hart. The musicianship here is outstanding, with Mike Renzi leading the way as pianist/ arranger alongside Jay Leonhart on bass and Buddy Williams on drums. Guest appearances by Harry Allen on saxophone and Warren Vache on flugelhorn add spirit and depth. The album was one of the last recordings ever made at the historic Nola Recording Studios, with the great Jim Czak as engineer.

Kat DeLuna made a welcome return to the pop scene in late 2015 with sexy slow jam “Bum Bum,” which sampled Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam” and interpolated Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me.” She then back it up with Jeremih-assisted banger “What A Night” (a riff on The Four Seasons’ hit) earlier this year. Both songs are expected to feature on the Dominican diva’s upcoming compilation, Loading, which serves as an introduction to her new sound.

Kat's own musical style is a blend of the blues with hip hop, pop, rock and even country music. "It's all related anyway", she exclaims. Her goal is to introduce blues music to a mainstream audience by re introducing it to the world as Blues Fusion. She is inspired by young artists such as Janelle Monae, Karreim Riggins, SyncOpera and ZZ Ward who share in her passion to revive music from the vinyl days. "It's about the raw emotion in every note", Kat says. " If I can move someone to feel what I feel when I sing a song, then it's all worth it". With her own band, Blues Revival, she travels the world with the intent to "wake up the blues one song at a time".

Vocal Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 60 min | 139 MB
Label: Mad-Kat Records | Rel: 2003

Have you ever been in a club, or sat listening to a live recording, when a tenor saxophonist blows a solo in the middle of a standard, and it stays pretty much faithful to the theme for a bit, then stretches out into some unexpected – beautifully so – variations of theme, while still hanging onto it? A small, gorgeous musical surprise that makes someone in the audience moan: "Oh!" And a beat latter he sighs: "yeah…"

Raybine spent eight years as a member of the popular group AURACLE (which he co-founded) and has since freelanced in a countless number of settings including with Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck and Rick Braun. He uplifts every session on which he appears. Cool Vibes is his fourth and most rewarding CD as a leader.

Vocal Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 49 min | 113 MB
Label: Mad-Kat Records | Rel: 1991

Madeline Eastman's second recording would be recommended if only for the "backup" group (altoist Phil Woods, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Tony Dumas, and Vince Lateano plus a guest vocal by Mark Murphy on Bob Dorough's "You're the Dangerous Type"), but even if the musicians were anonymous this set would be worth checking out. Madeline Eastman is a creative singer with an appealing voice. Most of the tunes are vocal standards, but they also include such offbeat choices as "Freedom Jazz Dance," "Four," and "Never Never Land." Other highlights include fresh renditions of "Cheek to Cheek," "Turn out the Stars," and "All of You."
