Randy Weston was 84 years old at the time of this 2009 concert at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, though the veteran pianist and composer manages to convey the spirit of someone much younger as he conveys the wisdom of his many years as a performer. Most of the musicians who make up his African Rhythms band are veterans of many concerts and recordings with Weston, including saxophonist T.K. Blue, trombonist Benny Powell, bassist Alex Blake, and African percussionist Neil Clarke, while this is the first recording to feature veteran drummer Lewis Nash with the pianist. Weston opens the show with his Cuban-flavored "Chano Pozo" (dedicated to the fiery percussionist who worked with Dizzy Gillespie), an extended introspective solo that leads directly into the brooding "African Sunrise."

An accomplished and refined player, Toronto guitarist-composer Galen Weston cuts a wide stylistic swath on his long overdue debut as a leader. Weston wails with rare conviction and facility throughout "Plugged In". Accompanied by veteran Toronto session players: David Woodhead on fretless electric bass; Al Cross on drums along with versatile keyboardist Matt Horner; Richard Underhill on alto sax and Rick Lazar on percussion, the guitarist carves out some fresh new territory on this eclectic six-string manifesto.

A hugely gifted pianist, composer and bandleader, Randy Weston is among the most highly regarded jazz musicians still active. A great admirer, esteemed fellow keys player Marian McPartland OBE, hailed him "one of the world's great visionary pianists and composers." With nods to Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, Weston is well known for his distinctive and unique sound, one able to induce the full spectrum of emotion in the listener via his rhythmic, percussive technique. Born 6th April 1926 in Brooklyn, New York, his Jamaican parents owned a restaurant in the borough. Weston began taking classical piano and dance lessons at an early age, and when his father Frank enrolled him at the highly-reputable Boys High School in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the young pianist began studying under Professor Atwell - a teacher who allowed him to explore music outside the classical genre.

Placing Randy Weston into narrow, bop-derived categories only tells part of the story of this restless musician. Starting with the gospel of bop according to Thelonious Monk, Weston has gradually absorbed the letter and spirit of African and Caribbean rhythms and tunes, welding everything together into a searching, energizing, often celebratory blend. His piano work ranges across a profusion of styles from boogie-woogie through bop into dissonance, marking by a stabbing quality reminiscent of, but not totally indebted to, Monk.
