In 1965, Scottish couple Hamish and Anne Gow created history when they became the first kayakers to make the treacherous 40 plus mile sea journey from the Western Isles to the mystical islands of St. Kilda. 47 years later, and in June 2012, two women from the Stornoway Canoe Club on the Isle of Lewis, Dolina Swanson and Christine Stewart, attempted to re-create this historic voyage. Armed with the original boat plans, the club commissioned the experienced Lewis boat builder, Angus Smith, to re-create the original plywood and canvas Clyde double kayak - a far cry from the modern kayaks of today. With the build starting in May, time wasn't on their side.

I would consider this album as the first KAYAK true live album because it has everything: there were gigs performed and recorded, and there were audience involved. Yes, you are right, "Eyewitness" was the band first live recording but it missed essential elements of "true" live records: the gig and the audience. "Eyewitness" was recorded to remark the end of the band in 1982. A sad story. This album was recorded live fro a set of "Close To The Fire" Tour in 2000: Rotterdam, Utrecht, Leeuwarden, Hrdenberg and Enschede, Holland. Wel well well . I truly envy on people who had a chance seeing the band performed the gigs.

Close to the Fire is a studio album by Dutch progressive rock band Kayak, released in 2000. It was a comeback album, the first since their split in 1982. The line-up was almost the same as the one that recorded the album Royal Bed Bouncer in 1975. Only guitarist Johan Slager was not involved. He was replaced by Rob Winter. By 1997, Kayak founder members Ton Scherpenzeel and Pim Koopman decided to work on new material. They had no name for their project yet, and it was not their intention to release the songs as Kayak. Apart from Scherpenzeel and Koopman, no former Kayak members were involved at this stage…

Kayak is a Dutch progressive/symphonic rock band that has been around for 42 years. In spite of their progressive sound, Kayak have enjoyed a platinum album in the Netherlands and even a top 50 single in the USA a long, long time ago. "Cleopatra - The Crown of Isis" is the 3rd in a series of ambitious rock operas for the Dutch Proggers, the others being "Merlin - Bard Of The Unseen" and "Nostradamus - The Fate of Man".

Starlight Dancer (1977). Like fellow proggers Genesis, the late '70s saw Kayak make an abrupt shift to glossy but thin radio-friendly pop. Though Koopman remains as a lyricist and arranger, the rhythm section has been replaced by the quite conventional bassist Charles Schouten and drummer Theo DeJong. The ostinato bass and hi-hat on "I Want You to Be Mine," for one, smell strongly of a discothèque. "Ballad for a Lost Friend" shows an increasing predilection for Queen-like bombast by the guitarist, though it and "Still My Heart Cries for You" do revive some of the band's old aggressive sense of dynamics. But more typical is the bland closing instrumental "Irene"…

The first half of this album is conceptual and revolves around the King Arthur legend. This is, as we know, hardly original because several Prog and Prog related bands and artists had already done this by 1981. Rick Wakeman's The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table from 1975 is just one example. But Kayak's version is, of course, quite different compared to Wakeman's. The first five songs here (Merlin, Tintagel, The Sword In The Stone, The King's Enchanter and Niniane (Lady Of The Lake)) form this half concept album. These songs are all very good and have a strong classic feel…

Another concept album from the dutch band Kayak but slightly different from Merlin, their previous album. This is more kind of a musical. This double album has a whole range of vocalists who sing like actors in a play with former singer Edward Reekers in the role of narrator. Before the lyrics were written for this album, there was a study on the life of Nostradamus to find out what part of the myth was real. That's why the lyrics hold some alternative views on his life. A lot of vocal harmonies are used to emphasis some of the main idea's and are delightful to listen to though the atmosphere tends to be quite swinging every now and then. So it's obvious the vocals are the dominant element which is new for the band especially when compared to early Kayak albums.

See See The Sun (1973). Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a newly re-mastered edition of the classic debut album by Dutch Progressive Rock group Kayak, "See See The Sun". Kayak were formed in Hilversum in Holland in 1972 by keyboard player Ton Scherpenzeel and drummer Pim Koopman. The band signed to the Dutch division of EMI’s Harvest label the same year and released their debut album in 1973. Featuring Max Werner on Vocals and Mellotron, Cees Van Leeuwen on Bass and Johan Slager on Guitars, the album was a fine debut and would launch Kayak as a major group in their homeland and further afield into Europe…
