This psych-rock trio inspired by the inventive guitar play of Petri Walli was formed in Helsinki in 1987. After a change of drummer, the permanent line-un consisted of Walli on guitar and vocals, new drummer Sami Kuoppamäki and bassist Jukka Jylli. Their influences are noticeably of the Led Zep/Jimi Hendrix kind but they did manage to bring something new to the "stoner rock" sound. Releasing all of their albums on their own label (Trinity), they never really made it big but had a small cult following in Finland and Estonia. By the end of 1994, six months after the release of their third album, it seemed they were on the verge of breaking through when their leader, Walli, committed suicide by jumping off a church tower…

In the history of popular music, there are a relative handful of performers who have redefined the content of the music at critical points in history – people whose music left the landscape, and definition of popular music, altered completely. The Kingston Trio were one such group, transforming folk music into a hot commodity and creating a demand – where none had existed before – for young men (sometimes with women) strumming acoustic guitars and banjos and singing folk songs and folk-like novelty songs in harmony. On a purely commercial level, from 1957 until 1963, the Kingston Trio were the most vital and popular folk group in the world.

While Jamaica is the cradle of reggae, many American reggae musicians are doing good work too. Formed in 2006, Brooklyn’s New Kingston certainly qualify; the group play a heady mix of old-school roots, dancehall jams, and R&B-influenced grooves on their third album. Kingston City also features several guests, most notably including the late Sugar Minott and Sister Carol, but don’t sleep on “You Are Mine” with Kimie Miner. Other highlights include the positive “Honorable” and the acoustic ballad “I Believe in Me,” as well as odes to different kinds of higher powers on “Mystery Babylon” and “Who Tell Them.”

How best to describe the performance here? One word: savage. Taken from the FOH tapes recorded by Greg Dean and mixed with audience mics from the Multi-track ADATS by Alex Mundy, this is a powerful testament to the latitude and grasp of the Double Duo in the live arena. Level Five squashes all before it, packing in more musical weight and density into seven minutes than many groups manage over an entire career. A high-powered and potent version of Facts Of Life makes for compelling listening – the revved up solo from Fripp is a joy to behold as is Belew’s rollercoaster solo on LTIA IV.

II was the album where Kingston Wall most successfully merged their hard rock, progressive, psychedelic, and Middle Eastern sounds. Much of this owes to the bandmembers' instrumental interplay, which is given freer rein and allowed to stretch out more than on their other two albums…

Bunny Lee’s flying cymbals, or flyers rhythms, dominated the dancehalls and the charts during 1974 and 1975. The style, based around the Philadelphia disco, or ‘Philly Bump’, sound of an open and closed hi-hat was not necessarily novel but Striker’s innovations of bringing a number of different elements into play most certainly was. Johnny Clarke’s interpretation of Earl Zero’s ‘None Shall Escape The Judgement’, not only opens this set but also opened the floodgates for the flyers style. The story had begun the previous year with Lowell ‘Sly’ Dunbar…

The River Rolls On is the second CD by Monty's Harlem-Kingston Express, a followup to the collective's Grammy-nominated 2011 live album for Motema. The group embodies Alexander's desire to merge the two styles: Monty says while the recording was made in New York, it made him feel as if he was in a local club in his hometown of Kingston. For this new one, Monty is joined by his core ensemble of Hassan Shakur on acoustic bass, guitarist Yotam Silberstein, and drummers Karl Wright and Obed Calvaire. They are joined by Earl Appleton on keyboards, electric bassist Joshua Thomas, guitarist Andy Bassford and percussionist Courtney Panton.
