Never judge a book (or jazz recording) by its cover, as the inconspicuous album portrait of Lage Lund's Early Songs is little indication of the music's impressive content. From Norway, Lund resides in New York and has performed within traditional boundaries (Mingus Big Band , Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter) and newly progressive terrains (Jaleel Shaw , Seamus Blake, and David Sanchez). The winner of 2005's Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition, Lund's guitar acumen is informed of Pat Metheny, Pat Martino and other greats. Yet, he seeks his own path, as heard in the new breed of jazz guitarists such as Miles Okazaki and Mike Moreno. ~ AllAboutJazz

Along with label mates Mike Moreno and Adam Rogers, guitarist Lage Lund is one of the most distinctive guitarists on the current scene. His previous three Criss Cross dates have established his credentials as an up and coming talent of great promise. For 'Idlewild', he brings back to the fold his close associates Ben Street on bass and Bill Stewart on drums.

On his third leader release for Criss Cross, guitarist Lage Lund returns to the quartet format that he navigated on the brilliant 2010 release Unlikely Stories , recruiting young piano giant Aaron Parks to join world-class bass-drum partners Ben Street and Bill Stewart. It's another triumph for the 2005 Thelonious Monk Guitar Competition winner, who puts his lovely tone to work on a program of six originals and three off-the beaten track covers marked by informed harmonic dialogue, keen attention to melody, and an endless will to swing.

This recording project brings together three extraordinary musicians who form the OWL Trio. Writes producer Jimmy Katz: "It was made in a former church I discovered when I was asked to photograph Pat Metheny for his Orchestrion recording project. I felt this location had a special sound that would be very sympathetic to the music and instrumentation of the trio. I attempted to record Orlando, Will and Lage with the utmost attention to detail, so that the group would sound as if they were playing in a real space in front of the listener. The trio used complete takes of each song so there are no edits and most of these tracks are either first or second takes."

Great tones here from guitarist Lage Lund – a player who works in these rich, chromatic modes that are really beautiful – and strung together here with a nicely gentle swing! The rhythms of the tunes are quite fresh – not what you'd expect for a conventional jazz guitar record – yet also not the obtuse kinds than can sometimes hold back a tone-obsessed album either. All of which means that Lund's found a way to swing these tunes, yet still explore his sound as well – ringing out these beautiful notes amidst the company of Pete Rende on piano, Ben Street on bass, and Marcus Gilmore on drums. Titles include "Strangely", "Circus Island", "Soliloquy", "Party Of One", and "All Across The City".

Possessing a concise pithy tone on his tenor sax that at times can be reverential, Jimmy Greene also surprises with an ability to translate that same depth to soprano, when making the switch for the odd tune. Greene's quartet consists of pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland, and, while this ensemble fits squarely in the world of precise modern jazz, the tunes due in equal measure to Greene's respect for melody and compositional skill stand on their own as interesting listens.

American jazz guitarist and composer Julian Lage has released his first album on the renowned Mack Avenue label, his 4th studio album in total. Entitled Arclight, for this album produced in 24-Bit Hi-Res quality, Lage teams up with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen – a shock and awe jazz trio that ultimately deliver a powerful recording, one on which we hear Lage on the electric guitar for the first time, accustomed as we are to his virtuosity on the acoustic.

Some albums are named for a time, a place, an experience, or even a person. Others have a concept. Saxophonist Seamus Blake takes on concept with Bellwether, a term for leader or trendsetter. Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Blake has gained recognition by Down Beat and JazzTimes magazines, and finished first in the 2002 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. His associations include Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, FLY and Victor Lewis. For Bellwether, Blake is accompanied by guitarist Lage Lund, pianist David Kikoski, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Bill Stewart. "A Beleza Que Vem," one of five Blake compositions, is an easygoing piece that features the leader on soprano saxophone, playing the melody in duet with Lund.
