British artist and cultural historian David Ellis first came to Lithuania almost twenty years ago. Driven by a curiosity about post-Soviet culture, he has continued to visit frequently over the years. In this film, Ellis travels through Lithuania’s towns, meeting people and discussing how twenty years of independence reflect on their lives. This journey documents Ellis’ encounters with present-day Lithuania and compares it to his early experiences, providing a gauge of the tempo and level of success of the transition.
This film, and its companion piece Going Home are documentaries in the form of home movies. It records the return visit of brothers Jonas and Adolfas Mekas to their homeland of Lithuania. They apparently left the country near the end of World War II, and suffered various hardships on their way to America. Until the time of this film (1972), they had never been back to Lithuania.

'Flight over Lithuania' is a legendary film, which won honors as No.4 of the Top 10 at the international exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hannover , Germany as one of the best films, demonstrated at the exhibition. When filming "Flight over Lithuania" a very sophisticated shooting technique was applied, and probably for the first time in cinema history, a complex new-generation sound system was used, where sound is transmitted not only in a usual Dolby surround, but also from the above and below.
