Asian Fields Variations marks the first time that clarinettist Louis Sclavis, violinist Dominique Pifarély and cellist Vincent Courtois, long-time colleagues, have recorded as a trio. Sclavis summoned the project into existence, but this is a democratic group of creative equals: "I proposed that we make a real collective, and each of us composes for the programme". All three are major figures in contemporary French creative music: this is a new group with a lot of history. Sclavis and Pifarély have played together in diverse contexts for 35 years, Sclavis and Courtois for 20 years, but they retain the capacity to surprise each other - and their listeners - as improvisers. Alertness and freshness are key qualities here. "We're always drawing also on a lot of different playing experiences. And those experiences are reflected in what we write, and what we play. We're continually bringing new things to the project, and we keep going deeper".

Filmmaking legend Roberto Rossellini brings his passion for realism and unerring eye for the everyday to this portrait of the early years of the reign of France’s “Sun King,” and in the process reinvents the costume drama. The death of chief minister Cardinal Mazarin, the construction of the palace at Versailles, the extravagant meals of the royal court: all are recounted with the same meticulous quotidian detail that Rossellini brought to his contemporary portraits of postwar Italy. The Taking of Power by Louis XIV dares to place a larger-than-life figure at the level of mere mortal.

Brahms's important output of 24 chamber scores dominated the second half of the 19th century, as that of Beethoven had dominated the first half. His corpus was thus a response to that of Beethoven, his model, and to that of Mendelssohn, who was likewise born in Hamburg and also composed two cello sonatas. In 1890, aged only 57, Brahms resolved to give up composing but he had reckoned without the inspiration that his meeting with the Meiningen clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld was to have on his creative imagination. He subsequently added four scores for clarinet to his output, including this Trio Op. 114. Louis Schwizgebel-Wang was

The city of St. Louis played host, in the 1920s and 1930s, to one of the most distinctive and vital blues scenes ever documented on record. Like Memphis and Atlanta, St. Louis served as a sort of magnet, attracting musicians from the surrounding hinterlands and providing performance opportunities that were not available out in the country. Many of the St. Louis musicians were transplanted Mississippians, like Charley Jordan, while others, like Clifford Gibson and Teddy Darby, originally hailed from Kentucky. The various early influences that the music of these players displayed ended up coalescing into something that might be called the “St. Louis sound”.

The distinctive colors of wind instruments can be heard in almost every line in the masterpieces of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. From 1781 until his death in 1791, Mozart wrote the equivalent of five concertos for horn - four practically complete concertos and some fragments; the works in this sequence track his evolving style. Canadian horn player Louis-Philippe Marsolais performs the four complete concertos for horn edited by musicologist Robert D. Levin. Joining Marsolais are Les Violons du Roy under the direction of Mathieu Lussier. Les Violons du Roy's discography spans 32 titles, including three Jun Award-winning albums and one Felix Award winner.
