The shows comprising LIVE! AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM were Marvin Gaye's first London concerts in a decade due to his fear of flying. This overseas layoff did nothing to douse Gaye's magical live presence as he performed a set of songs spanning his career. On LIVE! the debonaire singer charms the audience and peppers the early part of this set with some of his more sensual material including "Since I Had You," "Come Get To This" and "Let's Get It On."

Regardless of what the critics might think, for fans of the Rolling Stones early, more blues-influenced days, this albums brings home the goods. From the first notes played by Keith's Stereocaster on "Take It So Hard" to the Raggae-inspired grooves of "Too Rude" to the straight-up Rock 'N' Roll of "Whip It Up," this CD showcases Richards' versatility and strength. His rough and edgy voice pull the listener into the smoke-filled clubs and juke joints that inspired Keith to pick up his guitar in the first place. This Glimmer Twin certainly knows how to sparkle on his own.

For a concert held at the Hollywood Palladium in 1971, Creed Taylor gathered together most of his top stars and demonstrated why CTI was one of the most significant labels of the era. On lenghthy renditions of "Fire and Rain," "Red Clay," "Sugar," and "Blues West" the all-star lineup (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, altoist Hank Crawford, flutist Hubert Laws, guitarist George Benson, keyboardist Johnny Hammond, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Cobham and percussionist Airto) is in inspired form, particularly Hubbard and Turrentine. This wonderful music belongs in every serious jazz collection.
