MEDINA AZAHARA plays song oriented rock with a few symphonic touches, strong Andalusian vocals, and lots of preening lead and rhythm guitars. The tracks range from hard rock to power ballads, not exactly an impressive range. In "El Hakim", the group threw in some fine Spanish guitar licks, but they are not to be found here. About half the tracks on the original CD re-release are at least mildly interesting, but none stand out : "A Toda Esa Gente", "No Quiero Pensar en ese Amor", "La Tierra Perdida", "Tu Mirada" would be in that category, and also adequately represent the limited stylistic breadth. One of the bonus tracks is an alternate version of the excellent "Otono" which originally appeared on "el Hakim". And at this point the group does appear to be recycling, in dire need of a new creative infusion. At this point almost any new direction would be welcome.

The genre into which Medina Azahara had previously been slotted in is "eclectic prog", and nowhere does this description match the band's output better than on "En El Hakim". This has to do with the attitude of the group towards the compositions - one of patience and collaborative arrangements - and the inclusion of guest flamenco master Vicente Amigo. The result is a band that sounds, and even looks, like a mature version of the Gipsy Kings, one that knows how to slow down, take root, and stay awhile…

This 2CD box set was dedicated to the rememberances of Jesus De la Rosa after his tragic death in the year of band's 25th Anniversary.
A very good 'THE BEST' 2CD-compilation of the popular songs from the main spanish flamenco-rock band + a tribute CD of the same songs, played by famous modern spanish musicians (andaluz bands Alameda & Medina Azahara among them)…

Medina was another Bobby Hutcherson/Harold Land Quintet session that didn't see the light of day until over a decade later (recorded in 1969, issued in 1980). Again, it's hard to see why, given the high quality of both the group and their music, which seemed to get lost in the shuffle of jazz's late-'60s upheaval. Granted, it may have been a shade less distinctive than Hutcherson's earliest sessions, but the levels of composition and execution remained top-notch.

TRIANA is the most legendary progressive rockband in Spain. Their stunning debut-album was a seminal blend of flamenco and progrock and paved the way to flamenco-inspired progrock in Spain, culminating in bands like AZAHAR, CAI, ALAMEDA, QUALDAQUIVIR, MEZQUITA and MEDINA AZAHARA. The story of TRIANA started in Seville, the beating heart of the flamenco. Jesus de la Rosa (keyboards/vocals) was a known musician in the local music scene and he even had international success with "Los Bravos" and their single "Black Is Black". But he wanted to form his own band to make progressive rock, so he recruited Eduardo Rodriquez Rodway (vocals/guitar) and Juan Jose Palacios ‘Tele’ (drums/percussion). The trio called themselves TRIANA, named after the most traditional part of the town and they moved to Madrid. With some help they were allowed to record their music in a studio with highly advanced equipment.

US spoken word don Rich Medina is usually seen releasing a downtempo strain of hip-hop that branches out into more soulful territories, but BBE have snapped him up to take control of their latest compilation, this being number one in the new Jump 'n' Funk series. Tropical-flavoured funk would be the best way to give you a snapshot of this glorious collection of music, ranging from rare afrobeat to newer, more contemporary broken beat rhythms, but in reality this is simply a wonderful vibe placed under one roof. Inside, you'll find everything from drumming legend Tony Allen, to Fela Kuti, Tweak, Jungle By Night, and plenty more dance-friendly artists. Warmly recommended, and afro comp of the week from us!
