Le Miroir de Musique is an ensemble specialised in the music of the late middle ages and Renaissance, from the golden age of the troubadours to the humanist movements of the 16th century. The ensemble is based in Basel (CH) and brings together the most prolific of early music performers, many of whom are graduates of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The image of a «Mirror of Music» is borrowed from Jacques de Liège’s treatise (Speculum Musicae), and reflects our goal of painting a vivid picture of medieval and Renaissance music, in a spirit of fidelity to the original sources.

If this album of iconic pieces for oboe has been a long-standing project for Hélène Devilleneuve - super soliste de l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France - it is because of the particularly strong ties that she has with each one of them. From Bozza and his shimmering harmonies to the more obscure composer Destenay, of which this is the first French recording, each of these works show the warmth and light in the sound of the oboe.

The French oboist Hélène Devilleneuve, famous worldwide as soloist and also First Oboe solo of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France since 1995, has selected some works from the French repertoire of which a good proportion comes out of the usual. Because if one gives often enough the Sonata de Poulenc, sometimes that of Dutilleux, we strictly never hear those of Eugene Bozza, Pierre Sancan and still less - which is not to say little - the Trio for Oboe , Clarinet and piano by Edouard Destenay.

During August 2015 the WDR Big Band performed an impressive concert of large ensemble jazz crossed with African timbres and rhythms, at the Cologne Philharmonic. The guests also included Rhani Krija on percussion, Henry Dorina, electric bass, Woz Kaly, vocals and Jean-Philippe Rykiel, keyboard. The pieces were arranged and conducted by Michael Mossmann. The music is presented by Mokhtar Samba: it is about vibrant rhythms and hypnotising melodies. As Samba feels very close to the music of his ancestors, his pieces are naturally heavily influenced by the elementary power of African rhythms.

Very little is known about Charpentier's life (1643-1704). The main source of information is an obscure rival composer named de Brossard. According to de Brossard, Charpentier was originally from Paris but studied music in Rome under the composer Carissimi. In 1696 he beat out de Brossard for the post of choirmaster at the Sainte Chapelle Cathedral in Paris, where he remained until his death in 1704. As Goebels writes in the album liner notes, there are several reasons for Charpentier's neglect as a composer.
