Nels Andrews gained plaudits far and wide for his debut album 'Sunday Shoes,' as parched as the American Southwest landscapes he inhabited. Three years on and his second album finds him in New York, employing a fuller, more produced sound but maintaining a restless, questing soul. He describes the intervening years as replacing one itinerant lifestyle (labouring in the canneries of Alaska and planting trees in the forests of South Dakota) with another (travelling musician or troubadour). In the hubbub of the city he has sought solace in solitary spaces, abandoned piers and rooftops.
Medeski Martin & Wood + Nels Cline announce the release of The Woodstock Sessions on April 14th. The four musicians came together to record on August 27, 2013 at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, NY in front of an intimate gathering of 75 lucky ticket holders. The session was part of a newly launched series that brings established and emerging recording artists together with their fans in the recording studio. The experience is a performance/session hybrid that supports the artist to fan bond by sharing the process of record making. The end results of the sessions are inimitable recordings that capture inspired, one-off performances.
Recorded live at The Stone in New York City on a sweltering July evening in 2009, The Veil is the debut of BB&C (also known as The Sons of Champignon), an acronym for alto saxophonist Tim Berne, drummer Jim Black and guitarist Nels Cline—veteran improvisers with a long history of collaboration. Cline first recorded with Berne in the early '80s, while Black was a member of Berne's revered '90s era Bloodcount quartet. Unfolding as a single uninterrupted long-form improvisation and encore, the date's indexing points and song-titles were created after the fact for convenience. Despite having no predetermined agenda or rehearsal, the set flows as seamlessly as if it were pre-composed—such is the intuitive accord of these three veterans.
