Strut present the definitive collection of singles released by Sun Ra across his illustrious career, spanning 1952 to 1991. Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s offer one-off meteorites from Ra’s prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forward-thinking “Space-Bop” and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions.

Avant-garde music lovers from all over the spectrum will raise their eyebrows at this record: Merzbow and Sun Ra are two of the most prolific sound-weirdos out there, but this is the first time their paths have crossed. Of course, Sun Ra returned to Saturn decades ago, but Masami Akita got his hands on some unheard Ra recordings and fed them through his Merz-blender. The results make for a Strange City indeed.

The Singles is a 2CD compilation highlighting the heap of recording Herman Blount recorded and released solely on the 45 rpm format, even though he was pressing up full length albums on a regular basis. Some of these singles were released in quantities as low as 50 so if you were not in the record store room when someone came in to sell it, you didn't know about it until much later. A few of these are recordings from him incognito while others are Sun Ra in the spectral flesh. This was released on the Evidence label.

Excellent addition to any prog-rock music collection
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as a more modest-sized creation chock full of superb songs that are produced even better.

1977 was a transitional time for jazz enigma and self-proclaimed member of an “angel race“, Sun Ra. During the Summer of 1976, he had stormed Montreux and toured West Africa with one of the greatest of his full-sized Arkestras before embarking on occasional solo concerts for the first time, emphasising his prowess at the piano. Although he had always played the blues within Arkestra sets, he now summoned up the rolling tradition of blues piano, recalling Otis Spann, Avery Parrish, stride and ricky-tick styles.

"…There are a lot of "New World" recordings but Jansons is surely competitive with the great ones with Fischer, Kondrasjin, Harnoncourt en Kubelik. This CD is a jewel both in the freshness of the playing and in the clearness of the recording. My favorite!"
