Traditional occult doom with Lee Dorian (Cathedral) vocals. "Alkahest" is a term coined by alchemist Paracelsus in the 16th century, which denotes the universal solvent capable of dissolving any substance, even gold, and was also believed to have incredible medicinal properties. The term is believed to derive from similar Arabic words.
Occult rock has seen someone what of a resurgence these past few years. With heavy hitters like the ever-mysterious Ghost, right down to the marvellous Christian Mistress, this spectre of haunting blues rock blended with magickal lyrics has made for an interesting breath of fresh air into a genre that was started way back in the 60′s by the likes of Black Sabbath and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown…
ARCANA 13 hails from Italy, the birthplace of cult horror movie masters and conveys a lethal mixture between the visual terror of Italian Horror legacy with the heavy and magical atmospheres of 70s Heavy Occult Rock music. Eight legendary movies were meticulously chosen for their specific atmospheres and, around each of them, eight songs took shape. ARCANA 13 adopted a unique composition process where music and movie edits were conceived together along with the visuals postproduction, with the intention of creating an exclusive horror live show that will be brought on stage in the upcoming shows. This culminated in the debut album DANZA MACABRA that will see light in the darkness on Aural Music in March 2016.
Blood Ceremony is a Canadian psychedelic rock band formed in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario. Blood Ceremony's style has been described as "flute-tinged witch rock" and their lyrics are filled with black magic imagery and references to classic horror films. The band is fronted by singer/flutist/organist Alia O'Brien, whose flute solos are reminiscent of Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson.
Back in the late 60s and early 70s, Black Widow was one of the most prominent bands, experimenting with a mix of progressive rock, psychedelic music and hard rock / heavy metal. The band came to a premature end in the 1970s, but Clive Jones, the only constant in the band, has revived the band, together with Geoff Griffith. The band once caused stirs with occult topics and live onstage sacrifices and were major competitors to Black Sabbath for the throne of dark heavy masters of rock. Unfortunately, just as their star was rising, the band stopped working and they were relegated to cult status.
Now the music is top notch 70s electronic music composed by Garson in a brighter happier mode then his previous darker occult themed albums but it still sounds inventive playful and one of a kind….. so I have to recommend it without question.
Koldkrypt is a one-man black metal project from France. The mastermind behind it is the multi-instrumentalist who goes by the moniker Typhus. Koldkrypt plays a style of occult black metal that is very heavily rooted in the 90's style of the genre and they bring back the raw style and also mix it in with the more epic and atmospheric side of the second wave, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Satanism, left Hand Path, Occultism and Anti Christian themes.
Man is a curious creature, more often than not playing the fool while thinking himself a genius in the process. In the late 80s there were many a thrash metal band trying to truly capture and even caricature this basic social axiom, culminating largely in a punk-infused version of the formerly dark and occult-obsessed original that took Malcolm "Scruff" Lewty to heart about metal lyrics being stupid…
