Dixie Chicks first came together as a bluegrass quartet in Texas in 1989, later becoming a trio in 1995 when founding members (and sisters) Emily Robison (banjo/dobro) and Martie Maguire (fiddle/mandolin) were joined by 21-year-old Natalie Maines (daughter of guitarist/producer Lloyd Maines) as the group's new lead vocalist and guitarist. By the late 1990s, the classic Dixie Chicks trio lineup struck a stunning balance between the traditional Nashville sound and the contemporary influences of alternative rock and pop. In 2016, Columbia/Legacy have reissued the Dixie Chicks classic four studio albums: Wide Open Spaces (1998), Fly (1999), Home (2002) and Taking The Long Way (2006), newly remastered and available on vinyl and digital download.

George Washington "Wash" Phillips was an American gospel and gospel blues singer and instrumentalist. The exact nature of the instrument or instruments he played is uncertain, being identified only as "novelty accompaniment" on the labels of the 78rpm records released during his lifetime. This collection features the recordings made by Phillips between 1927 and 1929. To ensure a superior listening experience, the label tracked down the most pristine original copies of Phillips's 78-RPM records, created high-resolution transfers, and had the audio expertly remastered for the best-sounding Phillips reissue to date. Hear the sublime, hypnotic, ethereal music of Washington Phillips in clarity like never before.

Elvis Presley's 1971 holiday album Elvis Sings "The Wonderful World of Christmas" may not be as irresistible as his 1957 masterpiece Christmas Album, but it's nevertheless an enjoyable record. There are no surprises here, either in the selection of tunes ("O Come, All Ye Faithful", "The First Noel", "Winter Wonderland", "Merry Christmas, Baby") or in its soul and country-inflected pop arrangements, but it's a solid record that will please Elvis fans.

Noam Pikelny has emerged as the preeminent banjoist of his generation. He is a founding member of Punch Brothers, a 3-time Grammy Nominee and was awarded the first annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass in 2010. The new release features only the man himself, playing lovely originals and covers that showcase his unique approach to the instrument and compositional flair. He recorded them live in the studio without accompaniment, coaxing a wide array of sounds and colors out of his instruments, embracing the challenges and exploring the new possibilities of the solo setting. And, for the first time in his career, Pikelny even sings. It turns out he has a striking deadpan baritone that conveys humor and melancholy in equal measure.

Musicologist Adrian Thomas considered Grazyna Bacewiczs string quartets unrivalled in 20th-century Polish music and one of the centurys most significant contributions to the genre. Her folk-music infused First Quartet dates from student days at the Paris Conservatoire, while exceptional polyphonic skill, intense emotion and playful, high spirits characterize the Third Quartet. Both the Sixth and Seventh Quartets unite tradition with a strikingly effective and highly personal exploration of progressive contemporary techniques. As Lutoslawski observed, in the rapidly changing artistic currents of the times, it was [Bacewiczs] music which helped create that atmosphere.

Armenian-born American pianist Raffi Besalyan pays homage to his homeland with this recording featuring Rachmaninoff’s B Minor Prelude, inspired by The Return, a painting by Arnold Böcklin. The work was a favourite of the composer for his own recitals and a reminder of his years in Russia. Similarly, the folk-inspired piano music of Arno Babajanian looks back to his native Armenia in music that mixes folk idioms with the virtuosic pianism of the Russian school. Besalyan brings their music together in this programme infused with warm memories, evocations of distant lands and reminders of earlier times.
