Dixie Chicks first came together as a bluegrass quartet in Texas in 1989, later becoming a trio in 1995 when founding members (and sisters) Emily Robison (banjo/dobro) and Martie Maguire (fiddle/mandolin) were joined by 21-year-old Natalie Maines (daughter of guitarist/producer Lloyd Maines) as the group's new lead vocalist and guitarist. By the late 1990s, the classic Dixie Chicks trio lineup struck a stunning balance between the traditional Nashville sound and the contemporary influences of alternative rock and pop. In 2016, Columbia/Legacy have reissued the Dixie Chicks classic four studio albums: Wide Open Spaces (1998), Fly (1999), Home (2002) and Taking The Long Way (2006), newly remastered and available on vinyl and digital download.

Few pianists can claim a more impressive recording debut than Alexander Krichel’s masterful Liszt recital in 2011 (Telos/Profil). It was followed by two concerto releases, the first offering works by Mozart, Hummel and Chopin and a second with Rachmaninov’s Second Concerto and the Moments musicaux (both Sony Classical) as well as another solo disc with a mixed Romantic programme. All these suggest a steady career trajectory and artistic growth unencumbered by external pressures. Krichel, a Hamburg native who turns 28 this year, has now released an all-Ravel disc, replete with shimmering surfaces and gossamer textures beautifully captured by the Sony engineers.

Prior to his highly regarded 2012 Decca release of the Elgar Cello Concerto with Alisa Weilerstein, Daniel Barenboim had made no albums of this composer's music since the 1990s. The acclaim that the Cello Concerto brought seems to have opened up the possibilities of presenting more Elgar, as this 2014 CD of the Symphony No. 2 in E flat major suggests. Performing with the Staatskapelle Berlin, which plays with great vigor and expressiveness, Barenboim explores this piece in light of Elgar's ambiguous situation in 1911, the year he completed the symphony.

The new RareNoise release by Jamie Saft (piano/organ), Steve Swallow (electric bass) and Bobby Previte (drums), here with the participation of rock legend Iggy Pop on three tracks. That's quite an experiment, like something Frank Zappa might have tried…

Small Town presents guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan in a program of duets, the poetic chemistry of their playing captured live at New York s hallowed Village Vanguard. Small Town sees Frisell and Morgan pay homage to jazz elder Lee Konitz with his Subconscious Lee, and there are several country/blues-accented Frisell originals, including the hauntingly melodic title track. The duo caps the set with an inimitable treatment of John Barry's famous James Bond theme Goldfinger.

Formed in the mid 90s, they have risen to become one of the UK's most cherished and critically acclaimed rock bands. Led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, Anathema recorded 'The Optimist' in winter 2016 at Attica Studio in Donegal and Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals) at the helm. Doogan's influence is instantly tangible; for the first time in years Anathema recorded as a live band for an album, capturing an energy normally only present on stage.
