World War II was the first major war that was fought in the air as much as it was fought on the ground. We witness some of the decisive air battles that shaped the course of World War II: the Battle of Britain, the Japanese Zeros versus the Hellcats and Corsairs at the Battle of Midway, the epic raid of the RAF "dam busters" on the Rhine dams, the eighth Air Force raid deep into Nazi territory against the Romanian oil fields in Ploesti, the epic fighter battle for the island of Malta, and the air battle that tipped the hand of victory in the clash between Soviet and German forces at Kursk. Using rare archival footage and previously unavailable footage, a stunning tribute to the brave pilots that fought the air wars of World War II.

Any P-47 fan will really enjoy this video. In fact, anyone with an interest in aviation or WW2 will find it compelling. I've seen quite a few WW2 aviation videos, and this one rates in my top 3. The other 2 are "Fei Hu" about the Flying Tigers, and "Wing and a Prayer" about the Ploesti mission.

In August 1943 the Romanians–no doubt prompted by merciless Allied bombing–changed sides. Thereafter, events moved swiftly: the Russians soon captured the vital Ploesti oil fields, a huge loss to the German war effort, and within days the Soviets captured Bucharest. A nervous Bulgaria sued for peace with the Allies, but the Russians pushed on into Sofia. Despite German delaying tactics, Hungary fell next. In Yugoslavia the Germans held grimly on to Belgrade until October. The bloody mop-up fighting was left to the Soviets and lasted until the end of the war.

This episode is from the landmark television series Battlefield. Featuring fascinating archive footage from all over the world, the program includes a review of the political and military situation before the battle, portraits of leaders and commanders, an explanation of weapons and tactics, and the story of the battle itself. Vivid graphics place the battle into the context of the war as a whole.

The 44th Bomb Group, which flew the B-24 Liberator, was the pioneer unit for what evolved from the Mighty Eighths 2nd Bomb Wing into a full-scale Bomb (and later Air) Division. The Group amassed an impressive 343 missions and won two Distinguished Unit Citations between November 1942 and April 1945, dropping nearly 19,000 tons of ordnance in the process including the legendary August 1943 Ploesti mission. These statistics were achieved at a material cost of around 200 aircraft, and a human cost of some 2,000 airmen MIA, as the 8th USAAF focused its strategic bombing campaign in the face of determined Luftwaffe opposition.

In late July 1941, Hitler ordered Army Group South to seize the Crimea as part of its operations to secure the Ukraine and the Donets Basin, in order to protect the vital Romanian oil refineries at Ploesti from Soviet air attack. After weeks of heavy fighting, the Germans breached the Soviet defenses and overran most of the Crimea. By November 1941 the only remaining Soviet foothold in the area was the heavily fortified naval base at Sevastopol.
