We wanted to capture the sentiment of each song, and whatever emotional response it provoked, to be really honest to that".

The Left Banke pioneered something new with their debut single, 1967's "Walk Away Renée," which incorporated a small string section, harpsichord, and woodwinds to give the song a light yet dramatic Baroque flavour that was unique in rock at the time, and a perfect complement to the song's bittersweet tale of unrequited love. If the Left Banke's moment of stardom was fleeting, Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina reveals, for a brief and exciting moment, they were one of the best and most innovative American bands in rock & roll.

The long-waited remaster of this early industrial rock classic by Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor himself was involved in the remastering and the results are brilliant. But as usual, the CD version is brickwalled and the vinyl version is way more dynamic. See DR analysis inside.

Sometimes one gets an echo of Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn or A Saucerful of Secrets, and it all straddles the worlds of British blues and British psychedelia better than almost any record you can name.

If S.F. Sorrow is the Pretty Things' Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, and Yellow Submarine wrapped in one, then Parachute is their more succinct White Album and Abbey Road. It's not just a time line comparison. The Pretties made this fascinating LP in the same studio as the Fab Four, London's Abbey Road, with Beatles engineer Norman Smith producing… it's not hard to see why Rolling Stone rated Parachute the best LP of 1970.

Trash is the 18th studio album released by Alice Cooper in 1989. The album featured "Poison", Cooper's first top ten hit since his single "You And Me" in 1977. After Alice's return to the music industry in 1986 with the successful tour "The Nightmare Returns", Cooper had sought assistance from Desmond Child to create a comeback album. Trash became one of Cooper's biggest albums, accompanied by music videos for "Poison", "Bed of Nails", "House of Fire", and "Only My Heart Talkin'". A successful year-long worldwide concert tour in support of the album was documented in the home video release Alice Cooper Trashes The World. Additionally, much of the album conveys a sexual theme.

From Will Friedwald's Desert Island Disks. It's pretty good. The cd version is pretty hard to come by -- but easy if you want to spend $40. I don't.

Karl Richter’s recordings of Bach’s orchestral and sacred music influenced an entire generation of musicians and listeners, presenting the conductor’s unique sound and style. When Richter recorded Bach’s works, he freed them from a ponderous tradition that had mired the music in romantic sounds and idiom. Richter lightened Bach’s music, and, with an orchestra of outstanding musicians, helped bring it toward the more modern interpretations that listeners have become familiar with today. This is still a bit far from the historically-informed performances that are pretty much the norm, but there is a unity and natural originality that comes through the music in these recordings.
