£56 billion. It’s an unimaginable amount of money. Yet this is the sum that the government says is currently needed to propel our transport system into the future - by building High Speed 2, a 250 mph railway linking some of the UK’s major cities - London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. It will cut journey times: London to Birmingham in under 50 minutes; London to Manchester in an hour and eight minutes.

Throughout the 1960s, the Rank Organisation produced hundreds of short colour films on almost every aspect of British life. In a series reworking the best of this material to offer fascinating and often surprising insights into a transformative period of recent British history, this episode concentrates on the unprecedented upheavals in Britain's transport systems during a period when the popularity of air travel soared, rail networks were comprehensively dismantled and towns and cities were being reshaped to accommodate the unstoppable rise of the motor car.

On 22 May 1915, a collision at the Quintinshill signal box, near Gretna, became Britain's deadliest ever rail crash. Involving a military train filled with troops - most of whom were from Leith - heading for Gallipoli and two passenger trains, the crash claimed an estimated 226 lives and left hundreds more injured. The duty signalmen, George Meakin and James Tinsley, were found responsible for the disaster and were both jailed on the charges of culpable homicide. Neil Oliver explores the series of mistakes that may have caused the collision, the part played by the train companies and the government, and determines whether the investigation would have come to the same conclusions if it were carried out today. Dramatised reconstructions add to this compelling account of a tragedy which had a profound effect on several communities in Scotland, and remains the deadliest in the annals of Britain's railways.

Timeshift revisits Britain's railways during the era of nationalisation. For all its bad reputation today, the old British Rail boldly transformed a decayed, war-torn Victorian transport network into a system fit for the 20th century. With an eye firmly on the future, steam made way for diesel and electric, new modern stations like Euston were built, and Britain's first high-speed trains introduced. Made with unique access to the British Transport Films archive, this is a warm corrective to the myth of the bad old days of rail, but even it can't hide from the horror that was a British Rail sandwich.

Spain's Worst Rail Disaster presents a second-by-second analysis of Spain's worst train disaster, and delves into the important questions that surround the fatal incident: what caused the train to derail? Was there a catastrophic technological malfunction or driver error? Or was it a combination of the two? Was the train going too fast? And what did the driver do in the moments before the crash? This one-off programme also looks ahead to the future of train travel in the wake of this terrible event, featuring contributions from leading researchers and train engineers about the world's most advanced train safety technology. As Europe and other parts of the world move towards creating a high speed rail network across continents, the programme explores whether we are at risk of creating a network more susceptible to serious train disasters.
