The tale of an extraordinary human and scientific adventure. An adventure in which we are plunged into the world of the Egyptians 3,500 years ago. On the walls of the Deir el-Bahari temple in Luxor, a certain bas-relief has particularly intrigued Egyptologists. It depicts 5 boats setting sail for the distant land of Punt, ordered by their queen, the powerful Hatshepsut. Could the Egyptians have also been a great sea-faring people? To test this theory, a team of archaeologists decided to research the matter by building a boat identical to the ones the Egyptians had made.

Oceans cover two-thirds of the surface of our planet. The seas, which are vital to survival, have remained an enduring part of our human story.
In June 2007 the Oceans team began a series of underwater scientific expeditions to build a global picture of our seas. Their search for answers took them on an voyage of discovery to the Arctic, Southern and Indian Oceans, the Atlantic, the Red Sea, the Sea of Cortez and the Mediterranean.
Explorer Paul Rose led the team of intrepid adventurers, including environmentalist Philippe Cousteau (grandson of Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau), maritime archaeologist Dr Lucy Blue and marine biologist and oceanographer Tooni Mahto.

The BBC version of Life arrives with an at-times breathtaking, altogether stunning 1080p/VC-1 transfer; one that boasts gorgeous colors and remarkable detail, and puts most other nature documentary presentations to shame. Still, comparisons to the series' 1080i Discovery Channel release are the most inevitable and the most unavoidable. Simply put, the differences between the two aren't earth shattering – in some instances, our beloved little "p" may as well stand for "placebo" – but they are notable. There are plenty of scenes and shots in which the tiniest strands of animal hair are crisper, distant foliage is more refined, and the craggly crevices of rocky ravines are more revealing.

A Classic Disney adventure (based on the Jules Verne novel) spares no expense to re-create Captain Nemo's atomic sub, the underwater kingdoms, the giant squid and other Verne-esque wonders. Kirk Douglas, Perter Lorre and Paul Lukas are survivors of a whaling ship ramming who find themselves on the Nautilus, under the command of the brilliant but demented Nemo (James Mason), who wages war against those who wage war. The effects are remakable grand for their day, especially the squid attack as men armed with harpoons try to dislodge the multitentacled giant off the sub's hull. This remains the film that best captures the flavor of Verne and his inventions.
