He was born April 28, 1816, in London, England, and was educated at Charter-house School (then in London) and Trinity Hall, Cambridge (matriculating 1837; Latin Prize Essay, 1838-39; B.A., 1841). He was ordained as a deacon in the Church of England in 1841 and became a clergyman two years later.
