In the past few years of country music, there haven’t been many great certainties to count on. There were plenty of bad of course. We could count on bro country being a parasite that infects the genre for years to come and is still to this day. We could count on more trend chasing and more outsiders coming into the genre to further muck up the sound of country music. All of these negative things we could count on to bring country down.

Folk artist Richard Thompson released this nostalgia-themed album in 1999, hearkening back to the sounds of England's 1960s rock. For this, his fifth album for Capitol, Thompson teamed up with producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, and Mock Tudor had a more straightforward production than his preceding albums on Capitol which had been produced by Mitchell Froom. In this album Thompson draws predominantly on the musical styles of 1960s England—the time and place of his youth. The lyrics have a nostalgic tinge and are rich with allusion to fairy tales and children's books as well as to Shakespeare and T. S. Eliot.
