Italian dream-house DJ Robert Miles rose from relative obscurity to score one of the biggest and most unlikely hits of 1996 with his monster single "Children." Born Roberto Concina in 1969 to a military family stationed in Switzerland, he did not return to Italian soil until the age of ten, settling in the town of Fagagna. Raised primarily on the classic American soul sound of the 1970s, Miles began studying piano as a teen, and at 13 began DJing local house parties. By the late '80s he was regularly spinning hardcore trance sets at Venice area clubs under the name Robert Milani, eventually adopting the name Miles as symbolic of the musical journey awaiting him. In time, he assembled a basic studio system comprising a sampler, mixer, keyboard, and 32-track digital board, accepting production work with the Italian label Metromaxx.

Italian pianist turned DJ Robert Miles scored a massive international hit with his wonderful, dreamy dance cut "Children" (one of the 1990s biggest and best dance hits) from his debut album Dreamland. The album at times sounds as if it were one continuous song (or set of beats with similar chord progressions) stretched over an hour, which may detract some, but, in essence, is what makes his sonic dreamscape so engaging. It's at once both dancefloor and chill out material; one of those discs where one can hit the play button, drift into a different dimension, and forget about worldly worries. Dreamland, which is both melancholy and blissful, succeeds in its simplicity.

Robert Miles has taken years to produce this album, protected from the vicious claws of society, only by a personal demand for pushing music beyond what record labels insist will stir souls, but really pillage wallets. After experiencing international acclaim from his album Dreamland in 1996, he experienced legal troubles debating the rights to his artistic expression and exploration. Despite these struggles Miles persisted, starting his own record label S:alt Records and has since experienced due success.

A slightly bizarre pairing of two regarded musicians, in the form of pianist turned electronic composer "Robert Miles", and celebrated percussionist "Trilok Gurtu". Here they are collaborating on a joint effort that encompasses everything from creative Jazz, to melodic electronic breakbeat. The dynamics behind this are relatively simple: Miles provides the musician soundspaces, keyboards, melodies, breaks and string arrangments, and Gurtu provides his quite staggeringly array of tabla, snare, drums, clay pot & percussive beats either, over the top or subtly texturing the sound with compelling rhythms. (with the help of various artists such as `Nitin Sawhney' on guitar & `Adrian Bradbury' on cello).

23am is the second album by composer Robert Miles, released in 1997. It is a splendid product of Robert Miles' continuing growth as an artist. Comparing tracks from "Dreamland" to "23am" reveals new depth and appeal. Though it is among my favorite CDs, "Dreamland's" tracks tend to share the same fundamental sound throughout the album. Robert Miles introduces greater variety in "23am", providing each track with it's own distinct character. The true value of this album is found by sitting back at the end of a long day, closing your eyes, and savoring it's entire length. Robert Miles' new sound is beautiful, yet unobtrusive. It fuels the imagination, and sets the mind at ease.

This collaboration between electronic music whiz Robert Miles and percussionist Trilok Gurtu is its own curiosity piece. Full of lush, meandering soundscapes that employ everything from chilled-out jungle vistas to breakbeat and trip hop, from groove and creative jazz to the deep layering of traditional and popular Indian melodies from that country's classical, folk, and Bollywood traditions. Yet this set is hardly a mishmash: each of the record's 13 tracks are compositions as well as collaborations. Dynamics, textures, melodies, themes, and variations are all closely tailored for maximum effect. And while it feels much more like a Miles outing– given the propensity of keyboards and samplers – it is Gurtu's organic percussion that shoots through everything and provides a base form which all things grow into endless night stratosphere, and a territory of homecoming and eternal return…

In an odd bit of programming, Columbia placed the ballads from Miles Davis' February 12, 1964, concert on My Funny Valentine and the uptempo romps on this LP. Davis, probably a bit bored by some of his repertoire and energized by the teenage Tony Williams' drumming, performed many of his standards at an increasingly faster pace as time went on…
