The Sitar is one of the most popular instruments in Hindustani shastriya sangeet and is a versatile instrument. Its ability to produce a deeply emotive tone that is very close to the human voice agility and liveliness has made it a very sought after instrument. Sitar music has been patronized for about 700 years and the fact that it is still being practiced today with dedication and passion is a testimony to its grandeur.

The Sitar is most well know to the Western World as the instrument of India. Although it is believed that the Sitar has existed in its current form since the 1700’s its popularity among the West is a very recent phenomenon. Musicians such as George Harrison of the Beatles and Ravi Shankar helped popularize the instrument during the late 60’s and early 70’s. With its beautiful Eastern melodies, the Sitar became an easily recognizable instrument in Western Popular culture.

Indian Classical / Indian Raga / Sitar & Tabla / World Music

Ustad Vilayat Khan is IMO, the greatest Indian sitar player evolved in 20th Century. He not only conquered the sitar world, but experimented in wide range of ragas that any artist simply don't even dare to meet those high standards. Vilayat Khan has extensively recorded the Indian Classical Music all through his career that spanned nearly 7 decades. So, It's very challenging thing to summarize his career in a box set. However, for this 3 CD box, Saregama label pulled Vilayat Khan's some of very important music recorded between 1955 to 1990. IMO, A Holy Grail for the Indian Classical fans. Enjoy.

The most deeply sampled sitar, tambura, tabla and baya library ever released! Includes multiple mic positions, all important playing techniques, FX patches, and MIDI grooves. We came up with the idea for Sitar Nation in mid-2007, after noticing that despite the growing popularity of ethnic instrument libraries, few products sampled non-Western instruments with a level of depth expected from a modern sample library.

The bizarre sitar may not seem so strange at first glance. It has most of the elements found on any other sitar, with it's traditional gourd body, both main playable strings and sympathetic resonating strings, parda (adjustable curved frets), kunti (tuning pegs), dandi (neck), ghoraj (main bridge) all complete with orante hand-painted accents. At just over 24 in length, however, this little beauty is barely half the size of a standard sitar. Simply being small isn't bizarre by any means, but what is bizarre is how it can achieve such a lush, full-bodied sound while being so small. Intended as more decoration than instrument, we feel this little guy has been highly underestimated. Although soft-spoken and possesssing fewer strings than normal (5 main and 6 sympathetic), all this "baby" sitar needed was someone to listen closely. And we did very close.
