As with many of the other English beat groups of the '60s, Alvin Lee cut his musical teeth in Hamburg, Germany in a band called the Jaybirds. By 1966, back in England, he had changed the name of his band to Ten Years After and was rapidly becoming a major attraction because of the virtuosity of his solo work…
As he set to work on Monuments to an Elegy, the second "album within an album" within the larger Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project, Billy Corgan slowly whittled down Smashing Pumpkins to himself and guitarist Jeff Schroeder.
The deluxe version of Pisces Iscariot is a treasure trove of Pumpkins material, presenting the original album remastered, a bonus CD filled with 17 previously unreleased or alternate versions of ‘Pisces’ era songs, a DVD of 24 previously unreleased live performances from gigs and jams between 1988 and 1994, a reproduction of the Smashing Pumpkins’ first ever demo tape, as well as postcards, watercolour illustrations, lyrics, photos, liner notes by David Wild and track-by-track annotations by Billy Corgan himself – all housed in a deluxe box.
Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins were formed in 1988 byfrontman Billy Corgan (lead vocals, lead guitar) and James Iha (rhythm guitar). The band has included Jimmy Chamberlin (drums), D'arcyWretzky (bass guitar), Melissa Auf derMaur (bass guitar), and currently includes Mike Byrne (drums), Nicole Fiorentino (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Jeff Schroeder (rhythm guitar) among its membership. Disavowing the punk rock roots of many of their alt-rock contemporaries, the Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoe-gazing style production, and, in later recordings…electronica.
Lull is a four-song EP the Smashing Pumpkins released as they were preparing to enter the studio to record their second album, Siamese Dream. Essentially the "Rhinoceros" single and three B-sides, Lull is targeted toward die-hard fans, but the solo Billy Corgan acoustic ballad "Bye June" and the blistering "Slunk" illustrate that the sumptuous neo-psychedelic hard rock of Gish wasn't a fluke.
