Atlantic Starr hit its commercial peak in the late '80s, when the bland, insipid adult contemporary ballad "Always" soared to number one on both the pop and R&B charts. That song put Atlantic Starr in the Whitney Houston/Lionel Richie realm – in other words, people who associate Atlantic Starr with "Always" think of them as a crossover act. But from an R&B standpoint (as opposed to a pop/adult contemporary standpoint), Atlantic Starr provided their best work in the early '80s, when Sharon Bryant was still on board and the East Coast residents were being produced by James Carmichael. Released in 1982, Brilliance was the second of three albums that Carmichael produced for Atlantic Starr – and it is also one of the band's finest and most essential releases.

During the war against advanced colo-rectal cancer (from 2006), which included two primary tumors and two recurrences, Fred Ho, hammered by massive chemo and radiation, found inspiration in the fight for his life from watching movies of The Greatest, Muhammad Ali. Ali s bold, militant, defiant and spirited resistance to the forces of American racism, combined with his élan, grace and humor (both poetical and personal), his indisputable athletic abilities and genius, and the inspiration to the world s peoples (especially the oppressed) and their embrace of him, served as constant inspiration to Fred Ho. During one of his recovery periods, Ho decided to compose a work for his Green Monster Big Band to honor The Greatest.

Arthur Conley sang and (with mentor Otis Redding) co-wrote the 1967 classic "Sweet Soul Music," arguably the finest record ever made about the genre it celebrates. Conley was just 12 years old when he joined the Evening Smiles, a gospel group that appeared regularly on local radio station WAOK. By 1963 he was leading his own R&B outfit, Arthur & the Corvets, which over the next two years issued three singles "Poor Girl," "I Believe," and "Flossie Mae" for the Atlanta label National Recording Company. Despite Conley's graceful yet powerful vocals (which owed an immense debt to his idol, Sam Cooke), the NRC singles earned little attention, and he dissolved the group to mount a solo career, releasing "I'm a Lonely Stranger" on the Ru-Jac label in late 1964.

Following nuns, Cornish fisherman, and Chelsea pensioners, former decorating and painting team the Overtones were the latest unlikely act to sign a major record deal in the late 2000s. The vocal harmony group consists of falsetto Mark Franks, a former Pet Shop Boys dancer from Manchester; Lachie Chapman from Sydney; Mike Crawshaw, an ex-model from Bristol; Darren Everest, a Sylvia Young Theatre School attendee from Essex; and Timmy Matley, a former Fame — The Musical star from Cork. Influenced by the likes of the Ink Spots, the Drifters, and Michael Bublé, the Overtones formed their own home decor firm in 2009 in order to rehearse their sound while working.

2013 two CD collection that focuses on the Soul Music boom of the '60s with this edition spotlighting the city of Detroit. In recent times, any musical mention of Detroit and the 1960s has yielded a default response of 'Motown', and while Hitsville USA, as the Corporation's headquarters on West Grand Boulevard was known, certainly served to put the city firmly on the map, there was a time early in the decade when the Motown Recording Corporation was but a bit-part player in the musical output. Compiled and annotated by Soul music authority Clive Richardson, Soul City Detroit presents a selection of the recordings which served to establish the musical direction of the Motor City into the era which became known as 'Soul'. R&B has continued to be the cover-all generic term for African-American music to this day, but with changing styles and increasing elements of sophistication within the music in the early 1960s, Soul emerged into more common usage.
