JERUSALEM were formed in the early 70's and after releasing a self-titled album in 1972 they disbanded only to reform in 2008 and release their second album "Escalator" followed by the critically acclaimed "Black Horses" released in 2014. For their fourth album with original members LYNDEN WILLIAMS on vocals and BOB COOKE composing they are joined by the cream of the prog rock musicians GEOFF DOWNES (Aisa & Yes), NICK D'VIRGILIO (Tears For Fears & Spocks Beard) and they have created a stunning prog rock album that ticks the boxes on all musical and creative fronts.

There are a few artists out there that, without trying to change the world, succeeded in accomodating the old recipes to the present day. In the domain of Progressive rock, The Flower Kings is the perfect example. Following a path not unsimilar to Spock's Beard's, the swedish band led by guitarist Roine Stolt achieved to leave its mark in the middle of the Nineties, accompanying the rebirth of Progressive rock. It remains on top of the genre nowadays. It is no surprise then if, after having paid tribute to most of the giants of the Golden Seventies, the artists of today tend to care about that second generation as well. That's how the Musea label and the Colossus fanzine created an album in four CDs, tailor-made for the excellency of The Flower Kings: "A Flower Full Of Stars - A Tribute To The Flower Kings".

Guitarist Mike Stern's music has often been a little difficult to classify, featuring strong improvisations, the sound and power of rock, and elements of funk, R&B and sometimes pop. For his second recording as a leader, Stern is joined by either Bob Berg or Michael Brecker on tenor, keyboardist Jim Beard, electric bassist Jeff Andrews, drummer Peter Erskine and percussionist Don Alias; Don Grolnick sits in on organ during "No Notice." The music (seven Stern originals) ranges from the rhythmic to the more sophisticated and features plenty of the leader's high-powered guitar.

Michael Brecker - Now You See It…(Now You Don't) (1990)
Post-Bop, Contemporary Jazz | Label: Grp Records | EAC Rip | FLAC (Cue+Log+Covers) | 319 MB

An excellent 1990 GRP label jazz fusion album by the master of the tenorsaxophone. For Now You See It…, Michael Brecker's third recording as a leader, the tenor great used different personnel on most of the selections but played consistently well. Jim Beard's synthesizers were utilized for atmosphere, to set up a funky groove, or to provide a backdrop for the leader. Some of the music sounds like updated John Coltrane (Joey Calderazzo's McCoy Tyner-influenced piano helps), while other pieces could almost pass for Weather Report, if Wayne Shorter rather than Joe Zawinul had been the lead voice. Most of the originals (either by Brecker, Beard, or producer Don Grolnick) project moods rather than feature strong melodies, but Michael Brecker's often-raging tenor makes the most of each opportunity.

The music of Syzygy is an overwhelming experience. It is still possible to make fresh and powerful music which has its roots in the seventies. Combining elements of old school progressive rock (Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant and ELP,) with modern production values, The Allegory of Light is a complex yet melodic collection of songs that will truly make a prog fan happy. The three musician’s are skillful enough to play the complex and up-tempo material of the band. At one point the guitar of Carl Baldassarre sounds like Fripp and the next time you think you are listening to Steve Howe. The same story goes for Sam Giunta. One minute he sounds like Keith Emerson, the next minute you think of Kerry Minnear (Gentle Giant) or Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard)…

Formed by Uwe Haaß (bass, stick, warr guitar) sometime after leaving German band Tea For Two, Berlin-based outfit Zenobia started out sometime in the late 90's, with Frank Hoyer (vocals), Steffen Rohr (keybaords, synthesizer), Alexander Fischer (guitars) and Thorsten Kuhrasch (drums, percussion) as the additional members of the band. Their self-released debut "October" was issued in 1999; and it's strong influence from US progressive rock, the melancholy atmosphere and the symphonic style pursued earned them the nickname "the German Spock's Beard" at this time…

ETHOS were an excellent 70's US based 4 piece prog rock band whose second album "Open Up" remains a landmark album for this music lover. Fans of classic 70's prog will love this album with their great epic passages (a la YES) with complex syncopation (aka SPOCK'S BEARD, GENTLE GIANT and KING CRIMSON) and pastoral moments full of the glorious mellotron. In many ways they remind me musically of a cross of FIREBALLET and YES.
