Prognostic is the album that defines Strawbs once and for all as a prog rock force to be reckoned with. The music is powerful, yet melodic. The lyrics are biting, yet sensitive…

Although these are live-in-the-studio performances from October 2004 and May 2005, all but two of the songs were originally released by the Strawbs between the late '60s and mid-'70s. So it's essentially an album of remakes, including some of their more popular early numbers, such as "Oh How She Changed," "The Antique Suite," "Benedictus," and the multi-part "Autumn."

This album was originally the weak link in the transition of the Strawbs from an acoustic folk-rock outfit to a progressive folk band, being neither fish nor fowl and suffering from an anemic mix. The 1998 British reissue (A&M 540-939-2), however, solves some inherent problems that plagued both the original vinyl edition and the first CD reissues.

Bursting at the Seams was another matserpiece by the Strawbs. Hard on the heels of Grave New World, we were introduced to Dave Lambert who replaced the outgoing Tony Hooper. The album is rich in quality from the stunning ' Lady Fuscia', the epic long ' Tears and Pavan' ( if you have never heard this track you do not know what you are missing) and the haunting ' The River' . There are definite folk roots still in Strawbs even to this day. Sure they were going more to mainstream rock directions but these were still concept albums.

Good follow up to Deep Cuts but not as complete. There are a couple of weaker tracks like ' Carry me Home' and ' Goodbye' but otherwise there is more than a fair share of quality songs. The title tracks start as a slow moody song full of passion which is followed up by the catchy ' Cuts Like A Diamond'. ' I feel your Loving Coming on' a Dave Lambert tune is next and shows his distinctive vocals and songwriting style.

Few bands from the classic rock era that had some commercial success, yet never attained true stardom, have maintained such a steady release schedule in the 21st century as the Strawbs have. About 40 years on from the release of their debut, Dancing to the Devil's Beat finds them still at it, with a lineup in which all but one of the members served with the group back in its heyday. It would be quite unusual for a band with such a long career to be making major stylistic departures at this point, and the record has the kind of bittersweet, somber, narrative songs for which the Strawbs are known, as well as their characteristic mixture of folk and progressive rock.
