The teenage life and adventures of young José who lives in a shanty-town on Martinique in the mid-'30s comprises the body of this well-wrought film on how to enjoy what you have. José lives with his grandmother and is well aware of the French colonial presence but they are far away from his world. He gets into mischief, learns valuable lessons on living from an old former slave, drinks too much one time, and even sets fire to one of the run-down shanties. Regardless of his pranks, José never lets up on his studies and in the end, his diligence pays off.

On November 4th, 1971 Don "Sugarcane" Harris did a highly acclaimed concert during the Berlin Jazztage resulting in a album called "Sugar Cane`s Got The Blues" (at least 3 of 4 tracks) . The whole concert had been recorded by a radio station but unfortunately they didn`t keep all the tapes. Good news is, that besides those three tracks of the LP (CD 2009) there are three more tracks available now which had been broadcasted over the radio but never have been released to the public. So here they are in excellent sound quality. various sources

Forty years after first chewing on sugar cane in New Guinea, the home of sugar, the author underwent some complex dental work as a direct result of his sweet tooth. This led him to explore sugar cane's journey from New Guinea to Shakespeare's England. In the days before dentistry, people paid dearly for this sweet new food from exotic places - Queen Elizabeth I became so partial to hippocras, sugared almonds and pastilles that her teeth turned completely black. Through the ages sugar has offered opportunities of tremendous riches to the unscrupulous few who grew and sold it. But in the days of manual processing, these fortunes were built on the backbreaking labour of slaves. This history explores the effects that sugar has had on the world - a foodstuff we take for granted and indulge in more than we should has caused wars and geopolitical balances that have shaped the modern world and the power balances we see in the 21st century.
