Why they kept these 19 recordings locked up in some vault for 40 years is beyond comprehension. A chunk of the Live at Sugar Hill material – recorded at a club in the Bay Area – was issued by Fantasy as Boogie Chillun on LP in 1972. It is available on CD minus one track under the same title. As good as that material was, these tracks from the very same gig are hands down some of the sexiest, deepest blues John Lee Hooker ever recorded – and that's saying something.

…On this disc, the quartet plays nine compositions by Ellington and Strayhorn. The interpretations are dominated by the full warm tenor sound of Javon Jackson who is a fantastic young sax man, playing in the Ben Webster tradition here. He is accompanied by the great Mr. Hazeltine, who is the musical director of the record and plays some nice solos, too. Bass and drums are played skilfully, relaxed and with deep feeling by the other two perfect sidemen. Very pleasing and relaxed, that`s the mood of the record, that every jazz fan will like.

Dwight Yoakam developed a love for bluegrass music at an early age and for years has wanted to record an all bluegrass album. The songs for this album, his first for Sugar Hill, are new interpretations of classic Dwight songs and a very unique cover of Prince's "Purple Rain." The album also includes four of Dwight's past Billboard Top 100 Country tracks: "These Arms," "Gone," "Guitars, Cadillacs," and "Please Please Baby," all reimagined with a bluegrass treatment. Yoakam is an American singer-songwriter, actor, and film director, most famous for his pioneering country music.

Aside from being an excellent album musically, this is a very important record in the overall scope of things: first, it was the record that brought Ricky Skaggs to the forefront as a “new traditionalist” in country music—with it he began a series of albums that not only brought a more traditional sound to country music (which was getting pretty watered down in the late 1970s), but also brought an appreciation & respect for Bluegrass music to Nashville. Second, it brought significant attention to the new Sugar Hill label, which soon established itself as one of the leading two or three Bluegrass oriented labels in the country. Skaggs genius was to take hard-core traditional songs and give them a good dose of contemporary styling, without selling out or watering the music down.
