Whereas Zuvuya's first effort with Terence McKenna dwelled in the world of drifting ambience and psych-textures, "Shamania" manages to encompass many worlds of sounds (and a couple of dimensions too) to produce something that manages to almost touch base in the various camps of dance, ambience, and ethnic sounds, including an effective use of tribal chants and didj but never settles permanently anywhere. Like some soundtrack for deep space travel, Zuvuya are distinctly far out and gone (to a weird planet).

Indie Pop, Alternative, Singer-Songwriter

Breaking through aged 15 with a song, “Brazil”, that rails against corruption in international football, Declan McKenna revealed himself as a unique, thoughtful lyricist with a knack for scruffy guitar pop galvanised by classic hooks. His debut album confirms that reputation, investigating police brutality and media bias on the baroque indie rock of “Isombard” and highlighting irresponsible reporting of LGBT issues on “Paracetamol”’s charmingly wonky electro-pop. Best of all is “The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home”, which throbs with all the confusion and optimism of youth.

Terence Blanchard's 2013 return to Blue Note, Magnetic, built upon his decades-long history of post-bop dynamism with a forward-thinking approach that blended edgy, modal improvisation with a sophisticated, genre-crossing compositional style. It was a concept he had been investigating on his previous efforts Bounce (2003), Flow (2005), and Choices (2009), and, though it had been years since Blanchard was considered a young lion, the eclecticism of the album matched the work of many of his younger contemporaries like trumpeter Christian Scott and pianist Robert Glasper, the latter of whom even played on Bounce.

Dave McKenna made a remarkably piano solo debut in 1955 with the fifteen tunes he recorded for ABC Paramount (1-15). The remaining tracks on this compilation also come from a solo album, one he cut almost eight years later for the label Realm. Playing without a rhythm section, a key challenge for a jazz pianist, McKenna accomplished a recital of lasting value and pleasure. He plays with strength, individuality, fine beat and technique, and constant taste in all tempos. He is a wonderfully co-ordinated two-handed pianist.
