I'm certainly no jazz authority, but I love most of the stuff the Blue Note label put out in the 1960s and early 70s, including the albums by Stanley Turrentine. For my tastes, his sound was a nice compromise between the harder, avant-garde players and the more mainstream types. Turrentine had a nice tone and also had the knack for mixing original material with tasteful (although sometimes predictable) cover tunes. Unlike the other reviewer, I'm not much bothered by his cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on this album. Certainly, it's as acceptable as his version of another much-covered tune, "The Look of Love," though perhaps not as adventerous in execution. All of the tunes on this CD were recorded in 1967 and produced by Duke Pearson, boasting a stellar lineup of sidemen, including Julian Priester, Joe Farrell, McCoy Tyner, Blue Mitchell, James Spaulding, and even Duke Pearson handling organ duty on two tracks. Fans of Turrentine's 60s Blue Note recordings should enjoy this CD as well.

Jazz / Modern Jazz / Fusion

The musical range of this group is vast, as are the influences that inform its individual members, but as a unit they sound like no one else. Their long-term working relationship has paid off handsomely here; these tunes are all bravely voiced and beautifully articulated compositions of modern jazz. (The word "modern" should be translated to mean "in the 2000s era" rather than as an empty signifier that denotes type or subgenre in this context.) These selections have been molded by many different styles of music from the American vernacular: from folk and gospel to pop and soul standards, from country and blues to the spiritual jazz of Coltrane and Strata East, and even rock. But there is no mistaking what Seasons of Changes is. Something this ambitious yet earthy, so sophisticated, yet accessible to virtually any set of ears, could only be jazz.
