I'm certainly no jazz authority, but I love most of the stuff the Blue Note label put out in the 1960s and early 70s, including the albums by Stanley Turrentine. For my tastes, his sound was a nice compromise between the harder, avant-garde players and the more mainstream types. Turrentine had a nice tone and also had the knack for mixing original material with tasteful (although sometimes predictable) cover tunes. Unlike the other reviewer, I'm not much bothered by his cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on this album. Certainly, it's as acceptable as his version of another much-covered tune, "The Look of Love," though perhaps not as adventerous in execution. All of the tunes on this CD were recorded in 1967 and produced by Duke Pearson, boasting a stellar lineup of sidemen, including Julian Priester, Joe Farrell, McCoy Tyner, Blue Mitchell, James Spaulding, and even Duke Pearson handling organ duty on two tracks. Fans of Turrentine's 60s Blue Note recordings should enjoy this CD as well.

By the closing months of 1981 Frank Zappa had already released five albums during that productive year. Three of these records were his instrumental guitar collections - Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar, Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Some More, and The Return of the Son of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar - initially sold via mail order but later released through CBS. There was also the live double Tinseltown Rebellion and the 2-LP studio set You Are What You Is, released in September. Zappa also hit the road in September 81, performing a largely domestic tour that criss-crossed the US and took in a couple of shows in Canada between September and Christmas. On board for the tour were Frank s latest touring band, comprising Chad Wackerman on drums, Ed Mann on percussion, Tommy Mars on keyboards, Scott Thunes on bass, with Steve Vai and Ray White on guitar.
