Tim Garland is one of the U.K's most talented reedsmen. He's recorded several albums with Chick Corea including Originations and The Vigil plus orchestral works, The Mystery and The Continents. With virtuoso percussionist Bill Bruford, he recorded Earthworks Underground Orchestra. He's also recorded numerous albums under his own name and with Llamas and Acoustic Triangle. This is Garland's third album for Edition, the first being Return To The Northern Sky (2014), closely followed by Return To The Fire (2015).
With Lighthouse, saxophonist Tim Garland, pianist Gwilym Simcock and percussionist Asaf Sirkis make the move to completely egalitarian collective. It's also the first album to feature the trio without any additional guests. Garland's Lighthouse Trio first came together on the saxophonist's If the Sea Replied (Sirocco, 2005), an ambitious song cycle that—in addition to including mates from his impro-folk Lammas and Acoustic Triangle, which by that time also featured Simcock—was scored for members of the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra.
This highly successful blowing session works because of overlapping links among players and material. Bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Nick Stabulas were frequent partners, in the groups of leader Phil Woods and others. Kotick and pianist Red Garland also had working experience with Charlie Parker, whose compositions are heard here as well as those of Woods, who then and now was one of Jazz’s leading Parkerites.
Pianist Red Garland recorded frequently with trios for Prestige during the second half of the 1950s. For this set (reissued on CD), Garland, bassist George Joyner and drummer Charlie Persip are joined by Ray Barretto on congas and the emphasis is on forceful swinging. Garland takes such ballads as "We Kiss in a Shadow" and "You Better Go Now" at faster-than-expected tempos. "Ralph J. Gleason Blues" and the Latin feel of "Rojo" are among the highlights of this enjoyable disc.
Bimstein is one of several composers who have a love for "natural" or environmental sound and have created pieces that transform musical characteristics (pitch, rhythm, etc.) found in that sound to acoustic instruments (composers such as Ellen Band, Scott Johnson, Annea Lockwood, Gene "Blue Gene" Tyranny, Hildegard Westerkamp, and others). There are many methods created around that idea, sometimes varying with specific content.
