One is the new, highly energetic and unifying studio album from Tim Garland. Working with his regular collaborators Jason Rebello, Asaf Sirkis and Ant Law, the sax maestro has dug back into his past and re-examined his early interest in jazz-rock styles. With One Tim explores many of the influences that have guided him from the beginning, such as jazz-rock (his Canterbury roots); saxophone players from both sides of the Atlantic; the Celtic guitar music from long running project Lammas; the Latin and Spanish inflections that are so deeply a part of Chick Corea s music; and a variety of rhythmic patterns learned from drum maestros Bill Bruford and Asaf Sirkis.

British saxophonist Tim Garland was still a novice when he was asked to join Ronnie Scott's band at the tender age of 23, playing dates across England and northern Europe. Such experience allowed Garland to quickly build a successful career as one of the most recognizable tenor/soprano saxophone players in the circuit. He's a chief player in Chick Corea's band, Origin, and also fronts the Celtic/jazz fusion band the Lammas.

Three remarkable musicians with an uncanny unity of thought and feeling. Virtuosity may be taken for granted nowadays, but this music demands it. The pin-point accuracy, the long, constantly evolving melodies, the variety of moods and textures are simply breathtaking. Gwilym Simcock, now 31, was being hailed as a phenomenon while still a piano student at the Royal Academy, where Tim Garland was one of his teachers. No wonder that the piano and saxophone lines often seem to come from the same mind. Asaf Sirkis has evolved a whole new array of percussion to complete this outstanding trio. –Dave Gelly, The Observer, 15 April 2012

With Lighthouse, saxophonist Tim Garland, pianist Gwilym Simcock and percussionist Asaf Sirkis make the move to completely egalitarian collective. It's also the first album to feature the trio without any additional guests. Garland's Lighthouse Trio first came together on the saxophonist's If the Sea Replied (Sirocco, 2005), an ambitious song cycle that—in addition to including mates from his impro-folk Lammas and Acoustic Triangle, which by that time also featured Simcock—was scored for members of the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra.

The Cobb of Blue and Sentimental release combines two 1960 Prestige sessions, one of ballads and the other uptempo cookers. He meets up with pianist Red Garland’s group of JC Heard/dr and George Tucker-George Duvivier/b and hits the road running on “Sizzlin’” and a take of “Sweet Georgia Brown” that will get you on the basketball court in no time. Cobb was made for ballads, however, and he gives it all he’s got on the rarely performed Sinatra associated tunes “PS I Love You” and “Why Try To Change Me Now.” If I could play like this…..

"The big story in the album is '14 Steps To Harlem,' and what my father gave me," the veteran New York singer tells Billboard. "This is kind of a dedication to him, to both my folks, this album. But my father, he gave me a life. He provided the money for me to go to Syracuse [University]. He gave my brother and I what he didn't have. He was a very dutiful guy. I'm sitting here in a nice apartment with my wife, and my daughter when she's home, and I'm very grateful for what I have, and I know that's because of what my father gave me."

With a veritable All-Star lineup in tow, pianist Red Garland turns in a relaxed session that highlights his deft, tasteful touch. Soul Junction features tenor saxophonist John Coltrane in fine form joined by trumpeter Donald Byrd, bassist George Joyner and drummer Art Taylor. Highlights include Garland's 15-minute blues workout on the title cut and Coltrane's masterful "sheets of sound" soloing on the bouncy, breezy "Woody'n You".
