Billed as the first official collection of live bootleg recordings, the triple-disc For Lack of Honest Work is a live anthology stretching back to live-in-the-studio recordings of “It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference” and “Broke Down and Busted” in Philadelphia from 1971 and running all the way to 2006, when Todd belts out “I Hate My Frickin’ ISP” in Toronto. In between these extremes are many other extremes – Todd indulging in the early days of Utopia, cuts from his A Cappella tour, a doo wop arrangement of “Real Man,” a synthesized piss-take of “Bang on the Drum,” a solo electric “Hammer in Your Heart,” slickly accomplished on-stage jamming – all loosely arranged so the first disc contains the poppiest material, the second the proggiest, the third his mature phase. It’s not quite a straight-on realist portrait but a hazy abstract impression of Todd’s multifaceted abilities, with the overall range being somewhat more impressive than individual moments.

Todd Rundgren 70's Collection offers 117 tracks digitally remastered in 96 kHz, 24bit. Todd Rundgren may be known as an overindulgent pop singer and producer – but he's also got a fantastic talent for a good little pop song, and his 70s albums are littered with gems that often get lost amidst the shuffle of more overblown numbers. This collection includes following albums: Runt (1970), Runt: The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren (1971), Something/Anything? (1972), A Wizard, A True Star (1973), Todd (1974), Initiation (1975), Faithful (1976), Hermit Of Mink Hollow (1978).

These albums represent the first five solo single albums of TR with the omission only of 1973's A Wizard, A True Star, 1975's Initiation and 1981's Healing. Given the brilliance of his 1970s double albums including the classic Something/Anything? you might be forgiven for perhaps regarding this set as "the remnants" but what you actually have here are his first two pop-style solo albums that immediately preceded Something/Anything? (both confusingly named Runt), a mixed album of covers and original material, Faithful, and two excellent later albums.

AMG:
Something/Anything? proved that Todd Rundgren could write a pop classic as gracefully as any of his peers, but buried beneath the surface were signs that he would never be satisfied as merely a pop singer-songwriter. A close listen to the album reveals the eccentricities and restless spirit that surges to the forefront on its follow-up, A Wizard, A True Star. Anyone expecting the third record of Something/Anything?, filled with variations on "I Saw the Light" and "Hello It's Me," will be shocked by A Wizard. As much a mindfuck as an album, A Wizard, A True Star rarely breaks down to full-fledged songs, especially on the first side, where songs and melodies float in and out of a hazy post-psychedelic mist.

AMG:
Maybe some listeners thought that the sonic trip A Wizard, A True Star was a necessary exercise in indulgence and that he would return to the sweet pop of Something/Anything? for its follow-up. Not a chance. As it turned out A Wizard was the launch pad for further dementia – and, depending on your point-of-view, indulgence. Its follow-up was Todd, an impenetrable double album filled with detours, side roads, collisions and the occasional pop tune. That those pop tunes are among his best may come as little consolation to the lightweight fan who has stumbled upon Todd. Conceptually, A Wizard, A True Star may be the wilder record, but Todd is a more difficult listen, thanks to the layers of guitar solos and blind synth prog tunes, such as "In and Out the Chakras We Go."

It's hard to say exactly why Another Live works better than either Todd Rundgren's Utopia or Initiation, Rundgren's two previous excursions into synth-heavy prog-rock. It's not that the music is more energetic or focused, since it isn't. Neither is the music more challenging or ambitious – it's simply better. It's true that the second half is devoted to covers (West Side Story's "Something's Coming," the Move's "Do Ya") or Rundgren classics ("Heavy Metal Kids," "Just One Victory"), all of which are more song-oriented than anything on the first half, or anything on either TR's Utopia or Initiation…
