"…The whole thing sounds like jamming and improvising with fantastic solos and thrilling interplay, sometimes relaxed sometimes aggressive, always attracting. For example: Bailey and White are demonstrating for 7 minutes what “Drum & Bass” does mean to jazz men. One can use this instruments in another than a stupid way. If you like modern intelligent fusion by a small group, mixed with wonderful relaxed acoustic guitar tracks, here`s one for you." ~sa-cd.net

Following the success of John Barleycorn Must Die, Traffic planned a concert album for the fall of 1970, and it got as far as a test pressing before being canceled. A recording was necessary to satisfy the terms of British label Island records' licensing deal with American label United Artists, which had provided for five albums, of which four had been delivered. With Island starting to release its own albums in the U.S., the UA contract had to be completed, and hopefully not with the potentially lucrative studio follow-up to John Barleycorn Must Die.

When the Eagle Flies was the ninth album released by English rock band Traffic, in 1974. It was the final album released by the band until their 1994 reunion Far From Home. The album featured Jim Capaldi on drums, keyboards and vocals; Rosko Gee on bass guitar; Steve Winwood on guitar, keyboards, and vocals; and Chris Wood on flute and saxophone. (Percussionist Rebop Kwaku Baah was fired prior to the album’s completion, but his contributions are heard on two of its tracks.) The album uses a broader variety of keyboard instruments than previous Traffic albums, adding Moog and Mellotron to their repertoire.

John Barleycorn Must Die was a pivotal statement in the history of British folk rock. Traffic, one of music’s most influential bands, garnered high praise for their psychedelic blend of folk, jazz, soul and rock. Their original sound was complemented by unworldly virtuosity. John Barleycorn Must Die was the band’s most successful album and would later be certified gold by the RIAA. This outstanding effort would be the band’s highest charting album of all time, peaking at #5 on Billboard’s Top 200. John Barleycorn Must Die boast earthy staples including, “Glad,” “Freedom Rider” and the acclaimed single “Empty Pages,” which spent eight consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.

Although not a proper Spencer Davis Group album, eight of the fourteen songs on the soundtrack to this British teen-sex comedy, based on an early novel by official Beatles biographer Hunter Davies, were by the group (most done just after the departure of Stevie Winwood). There were also three tunes from Traffic, and a superb orchestral-psychedelic oddity from Andy Ellison (lead singer of John's Children).
