Wendy Carlos is an American composer and keyboardist best known for her electronic music and film scores. On this pioneering album the full resources of a Symphony Orchestra are emulated with the uniquely powerful GDS and Synergy Digital Synthesizers. Predating samplers, and in many ways still superior to that now omnipresent technology, these instruments combined additive and complex FM/PM modulation, with great flexibility. Carlos developed a surprisingly realistic library of most existing acoustic instruments plus many novel hybrids and extrapolated timbres that also sound "real." The two orchestral suites on this album comprise the debut performance and introduction of the aptly named LSI Philharmonic.

Wendy Carlos is an American composer and keyboardist best known for her electronic music and film scores. The same year Carlos finalized the score for A Clockwork Orange, the composer recorded a double album named Sonic Seasonings; it was a complete turn away from the majestic synthesizer soundscapes and classical inspirations that had marked the movie score. Instead, Carlos recorded large amounts of environmental passages to produce a work that cycled through the four seasons. Beginning with bird calls and a thunderstorm to mark "Spring," Carlos phrases the synthesizers only in terms of the nature sounds heard…

Switched-On Bach (1968) was an early album demonstrating the use of synthesizers as a genuine musical instrument. As an early user of Robert Moog's first commercially available synthesizer, Carlos helped pioneer the technology, which was significantly more difficult to use than it is today. Multitrack recording techniques played a critical role in the time-consuming process of creating this album. Switched-On Bach was one of the first classical albums to sell 500,000 copies, and (eventually) to go platinum.

The Artist

Carlos' musical education began when she started playing the piano at the age of six. Her formal education included Brown University where she studied music and physics, and Columbia University where she earned an MA in music. At Columbia, Carlos was a student of Vladimir Ussachevsky, a pioneer in electronic music. After graduation, she met Robert Moog and was one of his earliest customers, providing feedback for his further development of the Moog synthesizer. Around 1966, Carlos met Rachel Elkind who produced her early albums. Carlos has lived in New York since 1962.

They pioneered the mohawk, the fusing of punk and metal and did shows including the blowing up of cars yet to be matched. Labeled 'the greatest punk band in the world' by Tom Snyder on his 1981 TV show, by 1982 their next album was hailed by the LA Times as the best heavy metal since AC/DC…

"Child of Transference" is an extended choral type work. A blend of contemporary rhythms and production. The album combines the ethereal sounds of Enigma with the haunting vocals of Enya all arranged in an almost Classical form. In an attempt to only put feelings and emotions across it was important there was a lack of lyrical message that normally sustains conventional song form. The text was written in a phonetic manner with the words viewed as an instrumental sound. The idea being to maximise the feelings and emotions using vocal expressing alone. By removing the distraction of words, the sound becomes universal as is the language of music…

The story of how Like Wendy was formed is quite peculiar, normally bands join because they are friends, or school buddies or simply recruit musicians, but in this case, and according to their own site. In the late 80's, a group of friends who usually joined in an Amersfoort (the Netherlands) Pub to talk about music while taking some drinks shouted one day they wanted to form a band. After seven years Bert Heinen (one of the pub guys) had gathered enough material to release an album and he started to send some demos to different magazines and after a good response from Background Magazine and his lead to a contract with LaBraD'or records in 1997…

Cochin Moon is Haruomi Hosono's fifth solo album. Initially a collaboration between Hosono and illustrator Tadanori Yokoo, of whom traveled to India alongside Hosono; Yokoo ended up only drawing the cover, having been the worst victim of an outburst of severe diarrhea amongst the group during the trip, rendering this as virtually a Hosono solo album. Cochin Moon was written to be the soundtrack of a non-existent Bollywood film, a trait inspired by the artists' trip. The album includes performances by Tin Pan Alley keyboardist Hiroshi Satō and Yellow Magic Orchestra members Ryuichi Sakamoto & Hideki Matsutake.
