Under the name Sivu, British singer/songwriter James Page writes and records sophisticated, often darkly toned indie pop. Born in St. Ives, Cambridgeshire, Page spent his teenage years playing bass in indie and punk bands, eventually moving to London to expand his musical horizons. Influenced by pop mavericks like Björk and Beck, he had already begun to work quietly on solo material when in 2011, he crossed paths with Alt-J's producer Charlie Andrew. The two struck up a friendship and began working together, recording Sivu's debut single, "Better Man Than He," which was supported by an inventive music video of Page singing the song from within an MRI machine in London's St. Bart's Hospital. The release of a 2013 EP called I Lost Myself as well as a handful of other singles drew comparisons to artists like Wild Beasts, Gotye, and Alt-J, the latter of whom recruited Page for a guest spot on their 2014 album This Is All Yours. His debut album, Something on High, arrived in September 2014.

After the intricate assemblies and smart, winsome wordplay of his fifth album, 2015’s ‘The Boombox Ballads’, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist wizard Sweet Baboo (born Stephen Black, from Trefriw, North Wales) was tired. He “almost packed it all in,” according to friend and collaborator Cate Le Bon. “Fortunately you cannot split up yourself.”

Sweet struggled to earn credibility as album artists and/or score hits after finally wresting themselves free of songwriting/production team Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman in the summer of 1974. They turned out a few albums before achieving both goals with Level Headed. The album gave them their final Top Ten hit with the dreamy “Love Is Like Oxygen,” a single that suggested that its accompanying record was a trippy mainstream pop record. Instead, it was one part of an ambitious sonic mosaic where Sweet tried a little bit of everything, cloaking it all in a neo-prog aesthetic.

After working as an engineer for 34 years, Spike Robinson finally became a full-time musician late in 1985. This outing with fellow tenor Al Cohn and a rhythm section comprised of pianist Richard Wyands, bassist Steve La Spina and drummer Akira Tana finds Robinson holding his own with his better-known sidemen. The two tenors had similar but complementary styles (Cohn's tone at this point in time was deeper and darker than Spike's), and their interplay and occasional tradeoffs are delightful. In addition to some standards, they perform Miles Davis' "Sippin' at Bells," Bob Brookmeyer's "Rustic Hop" and Johnny Mandel's "Low Life" on this easily recommended LP.

Free jazz encounters the English folk song. With his perceptive arrangements, Saxophonist-arranger-composer Joki Freund, a major force in German post-war jazz, captures and combines the atmospheres of both genres.

Let me turn you on to The Sweet (or Sweet as they’re more commonly known), the 70’s, four-piece band from England. You might know lead vocalist Brian Connolly, bassist Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott, and drummer Mick Tucker by their classic hits, “The Ballroom Blitz,” “Fox On the Run” “Little Willy,” and my all-time favorite Sweet tune (and one of my all-time favorite tunes overall), “Love Is Like Oxygen.” But there is so much more to this band who sold 55 million records worldwide, had 34 #1 hits, and are still touring today (although not with that original line-up). A lot of Sweet’s wonderful music is collected on the new From the Archives album.

Just one year ago Marina & The Kats, the smallest Big Band on Earth, released their Debut LP „Small“. Now they are back in the studio. And this time the outcome is a vinyl double-album called „Wild“, with enough room for 16 songs. Marina and her cats are remaining faithful to their style and their slogan SWING SWING SWING. Having the experience and know-how of over 100 live-concerts under their paws, they‘re diving even deeper into the driving sound of the Juke Joints and Ballrooms. Racy gypsy guitars, nimble melodies, airy snare drums and Marinas uniquely charming voice meld into a nostalgic cocktail - ready to be enjoyed either at breakfast or in the evenings at the dance cafè, bringing immediate smiles to everyone.

The title track on Streets of Laredo’s new album, WILD, essentially sums up their attitude since starting the band in Auckland almost five years ago. It’s a gorgeous, soul-stirring ballad with a haunting trumpet line, buttery harmonies, and a chorus that goes: “They call us wild / Let’s show them wild.” Indeed there is a newfound confidence running throughout WILD - from the title track and “99.9%” to the eerily catchy “Silly Bones” and a sweet, lilting tune called “Doesn’t Even Bother Me,” which Sarahjane describes as “this beautiful sentiment about not feeling like you need to be in the mix all the time in NYC, but finding a way to live a happy, normal life with your family.” She continues: “We have an ideal situation, where we can do this and it doesn’t take us away from each other. When we tour and play it feels like we’re living a good life together and fulfilling our dreams. The trick is remembering to find the magic in the moment.”
