The long awaited release of Medeski Martin and Wood performing Masada material is finally available and it is one of their tightest and most imaginative CDs ever! Playing to packed houses from Budokan to Bonaroo and back again, MMW is one of the most popular and vibrant modern instrumental ensembles around. Original members of the earliest Masada family units (reaching back to 1993), they are keenly in tune with Zorn’s musical world, and a natural choice to interpret the lyrical Book of Angels. Returning to the fold like three prodigal sons, they have created twelve exhilarating arrangements that alternately groove, loop, shred and burn with a fiery passion.

Successful Houses And How To Build Them

Successful Houses And How To Build Them by Charles E. White
The Macmillan Company | ISBN : n/a | 1912 | 520 pages | PDF | 58MB

Originally published in 1912, this book is important today for the picture it gives us of both the ideas as well as the nuts and bolts that went into these ground-breaking houses. The book is illustrated throughout with many of Wright's houses of the day as well as houses by other members of the Prairie circle. A valuable reference not just on style, but on all aspects and details of period suburban home building. The many topics include: the horizontal line, the aesthetics of hanging window boxes incorporated into a design, decorative use of wood grain, the advantages of crank-out casement windows, use of glass, exterior staining, types and working specifications for roofing and siding shingles, gutters, recommendations for lighting fixtures, modern heating, plumbing, masonry and cement work.

Grand Designs is a UK Channel 4 TV series covering unusual architectural house-building projects, presented by Kevin McCloud and produced by Talkback Thames. The series is also broadcast in Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Germany. The properties featured in the series vary in style and design from underground homes to converted water towers, the only common factor being that they are all rather unusual or extravagant in some way. One project from the series was Ben Law's woodsman's cottage which was built largely with wood harvested from the surrounding woodland, using few commercial materials and predominantly free labour.

“Professor Surridge exhibits a clear and persuasive historical sense as well as sensitivity to the novels and stories. I believe this study will have lasting value because of its careful historical research and corresponding interpretation of the texts,” says Naomi Wood, Kansas State University The Offenses Against the Person Act of 1828 was a piece of legislation that opened magistrates' courts to abused working-class wives. Newspapers in turn reported on these proceedings and in this way the Victorian scrutiny of domestic conduct began. But how did popular fiction treat the phenomenon of “private” family violence? Bleak Houses: Marital Violence in Victorian Fiction traces novelists' engagement with the wife-assault debates in the public press between 1828 and the turn of the century.

Los Angeles Houses

Cristina Montes "Los Angeles Houses"
Te Neues Publishing Company | 2002-11 | ISBN: 3823855948 | 400 pages | PDF | 13.0 MB

Architecture is perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Los Angeles, but there’s no doubt that the city has its own unique style. Large in scale, its rolling, densely lit nightscape suggests the pockets of heavy population that spread out from downtown. In fact, most people from LA don’t actually live there, but in a suburb.

The result of all this suburban living is a hugely diverse residential area with spectacular houses in the hills and canyons, surrounded by trees and stunning views of the city. This book examines some of the highlights of domestic living around Los Angeles, and points out some of the major influences: Art Deco, Spanish, and contemporary architecture; spacious, light-filled rooms; and plenty of wood, steel and concrete. It examines how the city’s flamboyant past has shaped the landscape, as well as how cutting-edge architects and interior designers continue to create exciting new styles and structures. Acclaimed architects such as Richard Meier are featured here along with firms such as Bobrow Thomas & Associates, Legorreta and Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates. Filled with photographs, floor plans, sketches, and informative text, this collection of stunning houses proves that the City of Angels is making its mark in the world of home design.
