In the talented hands of the Danish String Quartet these ’Wood Works’ - traditional Nordic folksongs and dances - are buffed and polished to a glossy concert-hall sheen. Contemporary arrangements galvanise soft-grained melodic wood with textural metal, reimagining their source material with obvious affection and more than a dash of Scandi-cool.

Should you dye your piece or stain it? Choosing a color to stain or dye your project is the easy part of the process. It is just as important to know what type of product will be best to use. Oil? Solvent? Dye? Water? …..and what’s the difference between them? How do you tell the difference? Once that is decided, what is the best application technique? Charles takes you through this process and, in his simplistic style, answers these questions.

Frank Peter Zimmermann offers a fresh and exciting view of the Violin Concerto, less sentimental than some, with swift tempos and a dazzlingly swift finale. He phrasing is sometimes a touch angular, particularly in the first movement, and this usually works well, putting an arresting slant on tunes we feel we've heard a million times before. Only the very opening misfires a bit: yes, it's marked mezzo-forte, but it's also marked "dolce ed espressivo", and Zimmermann's somewhat wiry tone is neither.

A few of these small choral gems are well known to amateur choirs, and Poulenc's secular choral pieces are more often presented one at a time on choral albums than in the groupings in which they were originally included. Francis Poulenc: Secular Choral Music offers the composer's very first choral piece, the Chanson à boire for men's voices (1922), but most of the music here dates from either the late '30s (the Petites voix, for female or children's voices, and Sept chansons) or the World War II era (Un soir de neige), the folk-song settings entitled Chansons françaises, and the ambitious Figure humaine, whose final number, "Liberté," was dropped in sheet music form over French cities by Britain's Royal Air Force. Someone once described Poulenc as "part monk, part hooligan," and these a cappella choral works give evidence of both tendencies. The Chansons françaises are cheerful pieces with just a shade of extended harmony, almost French counterparts to Bartók's folk song settings, while the more serious pieces, such as "Un chien perdu" (A Lost Dog), from the Petites voix, have a mystical tinge that links them strongly with Poulenc's better-known sacred choral music.
