The volcanic, virtuoso clarinettist Yom takes us on a journey through the history of the Jewish exodus. Le Silence de l'Exode tells the story of their departure from Egypt to begin long years of wandering through the Sinai Desert: thousands of men in a no-man's-land, decades without feeling the passing of time, thousands of miles covered as if they were getting nowhere… This is a hypnotic journey across a mystical desert, one where oriental cellos converse with Iranian percussion, the double bass and the clarinet. Its score comes from the heart of a founding myth.

An inveterate thrillseeker, with his latest album The Empire of Love, the innovative klezmer clarinetist Yom launches himself into a new space-time continuum where French house, cyber-klezmer, and sci-fi jazz converge… Surging forwards with supercharged rhythms, threaded with shimmering strings and futuristic vocals, captivating melodies erupt from the acoustic purity of the clarinet to create music that is indefinable. Balkan Turbo Folk? Middle Eastern Dance Music? New wave Lyrical Electro? All that and more no doubt, contribute to an avant-garde musical manifesto that is held together by an impressively rich soundscape, a sublime hymn to love as much as a fantastical psychedelic trip; we stand on the cusp of a brave new world.

After the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE, a group of Jews settled in Yemen. They remained in exile, sometimes prosperous but frequently persecuted, until the 19th century. They then began to return to what is now Israel, first in small numbers and later in an organized wave with the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948. They brought with them a rich heritage of religious, secular, and devotional (diwan) music, the last of which includes both religious and secular subjects. Every Jewish community in Yemen had it's own diwan, consisting of works from the renowned medieval Spanish poets of the Golden Age of Hebrew poetry, as well as original writings from community members. These poems, in the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic languages, were intended to be sung or chanted. According to the album's compiler Avner Bahat of the Jewish Music Research Centre, the Yemenite diwan is "the richest and most valuable of all." Eleven poems are presented in this 1976-77 recording.

"Soul Whispers" is the debut recording by pianist Shoshana Michel. She has arranged and performed a beautiful collection of twelve soothing Jewish melodies (public domain) for solo piano. These songs are also known as Chabad Nigunim. Elegantly and soulfully performed, the music is relaxing and spiritually uplifting whether or not you are of the Jewish faith or culture. Shoshana Michel has been playing the piano since she was a child and this music is obviously very dear to her heart. Jewish music tends to be in minor keys with a melancholy feeling to them - distinctive and very emotionally stirring.

Yolanda Cristina Gigliotti, better known as Dalida (Arabic: داليدا‎‎), was an Italian then French singer and actress who was born in Egypt. She performed and recorded in more than ten languages, including Arabic, Italian, Greek, German, French, English, Japanese, Hebrew, Dutch and Spanish. She spent most of her career in France and acquired French citizenship in 1961 upon marriage, while maintaining her original Italian one. Twice honoured with the Oscar mondial du succès du disque (the "World Oscar of Recording Success"), she is the only European singer to have won this award more than once. Dalida ranks among the 7 biggest singers of all time. Her 30-year career began in 1956 and ended with her last album in 1986, half a year before her death, while continuing to hold concerts until her last days. Her suicide led to an iconic image as a tragic diva and renowned singer. She received more than 70 gold records and was the first singer to receive platinum and diamond discs. She sold more than 170 million albums worldwide.

This new live recording pairs profound works by two of the twentieth century's greatest composers: Arnold Schoenberg and Dmitri Shostakovich. Writer Phillip Huscher describes Schoenberg's Kol Nidre a "stark, strong modernist statement," set to the prayer said on the eve of Yom Kippur the Day of Atonement. Schoenberg, who had fled Europe in 1934, premiered the work in Los Angeles in 1938, one month before the devastating the anti Jewish pogroms of Kristallnacht took place throughout Nazi-Germany. Shostakovich's suite explores similarly weighty concerns, including themes of love, morality, death, and the human spirit through the poetry of the Renaissance master Michelangelo. Although originally conceived to honor the fifth centenary of the artist's birth, Shostakovich's settings became a highly personal testament to concerns the two men shared across the centuries.

'Dance!' features the seldom heard combination of violin and accordion. Not much repertoire has been composed for this pairing of instruments, so all of the varied music here - including well-known pieces by Brahms, Bartók, Dvorák and others - has been expertly arranged. It's performed by two top Dutch musicians: violin virtuoso Cécile Huijnen is first concert master of The Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, a position she has held since 2000, and Marieke Grotenhuis is one of the foremost accordionists in the Netherlands.
