Elephant Mountain (1969) is the Youngbloods' third long-player and marks their debut as a trio – featuring Jesse Colin Young (bass/guitar/vocals), Joe Bauer (drums), and Lowell "Banana" Levinger (keyboards) – after the departure of co-founder Jerry Corbitt (guitar/vocals). From the award-winning author of Hers the Kingdom comes a delightful, irresistibly beguiling novel, alive with vibrant characters and an incandescent spirit. California in the 1960s and 70s forms the background to a saga of one family’s passions, past and present, played out against the explosive era of the Vietnam War. Gift of the Golden Mountain follows the young part-Chinese heiress, May Reade, as she searches through her illustrious heritage for the roots of her own identity and her struggle to reconcile her Asian self with the American.
This amazing album was recorded in a single December 1969 session (with noted CSNY producer Bill Halverson) and released in February 1970 by Atco Records. All the musicians from that band had worked previously with drummer Dewey Martin in his New Buffalo Springfield and the similarities with Stills/Young original group are very evident here. The LP features a stash of eclectic and very diverse material, impressive multiple vocal harmonies and the Springfield's trademark three-guitar assault - with plenty of fuzz! This band can be ethereal and dreamy or genuinely heavy. In other words it’s an astonishing mixture of West Coast rock and heavier, UK-influenced riff-rock, in addition devoid of any weak tracks! This carefully remastered edition has been expanded with one track from rare single.
Three days before Christmas, Matt Jensen is traveling the Denver and Pacific railway when an avalanche slams down onto the train, trapping it in desolate Trout Creek Pass. But it wasnt an act of nature that caused the accident; it was a gang of outlaws attempting to rescue their leader, who is being taken to Red Cliff to be hanged. As Smoke Jensen and Duff MacCallister frantically try to make their way to the scene, Matt struggles to save the survivors, among them a beautiful young woman with a dark past, a merchant seaman turned rancher, and a senator with his very ill young daughter.
